maltatoday | SUNDAY • 26 SEPTEMBER 2021 13 ALMANAC Nature Notebook 781. Ivy IVY is one of very few true climber plants that occur in Malta. It's not at all widespread, though in places where it occurs – like Buskett, its main stronghold – it can be very common, groping up walls and tree trunks. Ivy (M. liedna) has these special sticky roots that grow out of the stem and glue themselves to the stone or wood on which the plant is growing. It's a beautiful evergreen species, with glossy dark green leaves. Its real beauty, however, lies in the thick shelter it creates where many forms of life can hide and live and breed. Its autumn flowers are a magnet for nectar and pollen loving insects, and its berries are a winter lifesaver for cold and hungry birds like robins and blackcaps.
