maltatoday | SUNDAY • 3 OCTOBER 2021 9 ALMANAC Fast art Nature Notebook 782. Common Redstart AMONG the myriad birds currently migrating south across our Is- lands is the common redstart. While most ouf our perching birds are rather muted in colour, this customer begs to differ. The com- mon redstart (M. fjamma) is one of three redstart species that occur in our countryside. All three sport the same black-white-rust colour scheme but each species applies them differently, though they all have the rust-red tail. This explains the word 'redstart' (start being an old English word for tail) – unfortunately it's the 'common' in the name that's less appropriate nowadays, as the bird is not as common today as it was, say, 30 years ago. Considering the wars we constantly wage on insects – now further aggravated with climate change – it's no surprise that many insectivorous birds are losing out. It is probable that this change in consumption will cause changes in policy regarding the meat industry in the coming years. It has been estimated that in order to reach ideal greenhouse gas emis- sions from the meat industry, the consumption of animal products in wealthy countries should decrease to around a quarter of what it is today. For future policies to cater for this change in consumption, a detailed understanding of the younger generations is needed. This is because diet is highly dependent on habit and lifestyle. When dealing with the European Union, Bulgarians and Slovakians con- sume the least meat. On the other hand, Spain consumes the most.
