maltatoday | SUNDAY • 31 OCTOBER 2021 7 ART Ethiopian artist Dawit Adnew exhibits his work in Malta CHRISTINE X Art Gallery has taken on the opportunity to introduce Contemporary African Art in Malta starting with the Ethiopian artist Dawit Adnew. This comes at the time when Malta opened an Embas- sy in Ethiopia. Dawit Adnew's solo art exhibition with art- works titled 'Paved Road' will be exhibited at Christine X Art Gallery in Tigne street, Sliema, from the 5th to the 21st No- vember 2021. Nineteen artworks with a great resemblance to the work of French impression- ist artist Paul Gauguin are set to impress anyone with a love for patterns in the arts of Africa, Asia, and French Poly- nesia. Like Gauguin, Adnew's use of vibrant colours seeks the "the music of painting' and the harmony amongst an array of colours and like Gauguin, he sets his figures against the complementary blues and greens of the trop- ical scenery, replacing the French Polynesian backdrops with backdrops typical to the beautiful Ethiopia. Most of the time, Adnew's figures also add their hue to blues and greens with African tex- tile patterns visible in their clothing. Patterns, forms and colour is where Dawit Adnew sees movement, where his in- spiration arises from. Recent years saw a great sur- gency in African art sales with growth attributed to a grow- ing number of African mu- seums, galleries and art fairs which have also expanded to Europe and the US, advances in cultural infrastructure and a developing wealthy class in Africa. We are yet to see more development in the con- temporary African art market as the African continent con- tinues to develop and more cultural institutions imple- mented, as Africa's growing upper class increases and the wealthy are increasingly turn- ing to art for investment. Af- rican art will only continue to become more prevalent. This exhibition will be open from 5th to 21st November 2021 at Christine X Art Gal- lery in Tigne street, Sliema. Opening hours are Mon- day to Saturday 10am-1pm, 4-7pm or by appointment.
