14 maltatoday | WEDNESDAY • 3 NOVEMBER 2021 NEWS LABOUR MEP Cyrus Enger- er will form part of the Euro- pean Parliament delegation at COP26, the 26th United Nations Climate Change conference. World leaders will meet in Glasgow between 31 October and 12 November 2021 to dis- cuss urgent measures on the mitigation of climate change. The European Union delega- tion will be led by European Commission Executive Vice President Frans Timmermans. "The work done by our of- fice in Brussels on the envi- ronment, climate change and the EU's fundamental values is reaping fruit and this is being recognised by the Group of So- cialists and Democrats in the European Parliament Group and within the European Par- liament's administration. I feel truly humbled and honoured to be a part of the European Par- liament's delegation attending COP26 alongside global lead- ers and decision-makers," En- gerer said. He said that the EU's ambi- tion must go beyond Euope's shores in order to instigate changes worldwide. "We have the green deal, we're the first to have a Cli- mate Law with the objective of achieving carbon neutrality by 2050, and now we're looking at 2030 through our Fit for 55 package. It's now time to advo- cate with the rest of the world for a common set of actions," Engerer concluded. Cyrus Engerer to form part of European Parliament delegation at COP26 Id-Dar tal-Providenza awarded the 2021 European Citizen's Prize ID-DAR tal-Providenza's Mon- ument of Mercy project has won the European Parliament's 2021 Citizen's Prize for Malta in rec- ognition of its embodiment of the best of Maltese and EU val- ues. The 2021 winner's nomination, put forward by MEPs Roberta Metsola and David Casa (EPP, MT), said the mission of pro- viding homes with a family-like environment integrates and em- powers people with a disability within the community, in line with EU norms and values, and this challenging task continued to be carried out even in last year's exceptionally difficult cir- cumstances. The European Citizen's Prize is awarded every year for excep- tional achievements by citizens in EU Member States. "Id-Dar tal-Providenza and its project 'Monument of Mercy' proved to all the European In- stitutions what we Maltese were already privileged to know," said MEP Alex Agius Saliba (S&D, MT) who presented the Citizen's Prize medal to id-Dar tal-Providenza Director Fr Mar- tin Micallef. "Id-Dar tal-Providenza embod- ies the best of the values that we as Maltese and Europeans hold dear. Their excellent work in exceptionally difficult circum- stances with the most vulnerable group of people in our society displays the best values of the EU and provides an example for all of us to follow," the Labour MEP said. Id-Dar tal-Providenza Director Fr Martin Micallef, expressed appreciation for the recognition by the European Parliament, and contextualised the organisa- tion's work in the bigger Europe- an picture. "The EU strategy for people with disabilities between 2021 and 2030, is built around the recognition of the rights granted in various countries in Europe by other countries in Europe, around independent and where possible autonomous living, and the elimination of discrimina- tion and the creation of equal opportunities at every possible level," Fr Martin said. "These are intrinsic to the con- cept of dignity, a concept which is at the heart of everything cre- ated by Mons Mikiel Azzopardi when he dreamed of and started working on the Dar Tal-Prov- idenza project, and which so many Maltese and Gozo believed in and supported over the years." "The European Parliament does not only legislate, it also likes to promote what is good," said the Head of the European Parliament Office in Malta Dr Mario Sammut. "Even when faced with diffi- culties during the pandemic, id- Dar tal-Providenza continued to protect the most vulnerable in our society. Their excellent work in such exceptionally difficult circumstances, displays the best of European values. Recognizing this effort and commitment is of tremendous importance to the European Parliament, and hence this award." Other recent winners of this award in Malta include Bjorn Formosa of ALS Malta and the Għaqda Każini tal-Baned. Fr Martin Saliba is presented with the prize by Labour MEP Alex Agius Saliba
