maltatoday | SUNDAY • 7 NOVEMBER 2021 13 ALMANAC Fast art Nature Notebook 787. Is-simar Nature Reserve IS-SIMAR is a tiny enclave of nature tucked inside Xemxija Bay. Way back in the 1980s BirdLife pleaded for its protection and rehabilita- tion. Luckily the pleas fell on sympathetic ears and in the early 1990s the five hectares of land were snatched just in time from imminent development. Since then it has been managed with nature in mind, and today it showcases what nature gives back when given time and a little tlc. Is-Simar of today is a far cry from the litter-jammed ditch I remember. A permanent lake and reedbed attract egrets, grebes and rails, and many woodland birds stay the winter. And, as with all the sites under BirdLife management, people are part of the equation. The site is open free of charge for schools (weekday mornings) and for the public (afternoons and weekends). Throughout the years the CAP has undergone several reforms and expanded its areas of activities in order to response to new appearing challenges. The new CAP reform covers the period from 2023 until 2027. This reform is crucial to fight for climate justice and make this world greener and fairer! It's also meant to be more flexible meaning that each EU member state will develop its own CAP strategic plan.
