maltatoday | SUNDAY • 5 DECEMBER 2021 6 CHRISTMAS Experience the magic of Christmas through Science at Esplora WH AT better way to cele- brate Christmas than through science that sparks wonder? The magic of this holiday season remains with us as we grow older and it's this kind of fascination and curiosit y that helps both children and adults understand the world better. Curiosity is at the heart of what Esplora Interactive Sci- ence Centre does – it wants visitors to ask and prob- lem-solve their own questions. It wants visitors to find their inner child, to enjoy them- selves, and to have fun as they engage with science through play, because play-learning not only nurtures imagination, but it also stimulates both conscious as well as uncon- scious learning. And what better way to do so than through a form of visual arts which we all love – mov- ies! During Esplora's Christmas themed opening hours, be- tween the 23rd of December 2021 and the 6th of January 2022, visitors can explore sci- ence and technology through the wonders of Christmas and movies. Esplora's interactive exhib- its stimulate learning through play and help visitors gain an insight into how the world works and how science is rel- evant to our everyday life. But that's not all. They can also be used to explore how science, technology, engineering, and mathematics is used in the film-making industry, both on set as well as behind the scenes. Take the famous Lord of the Rings trilogy as an example. An optical illusion was used in the films to make the hobbits appear smaller than humans. How? By using an Ames Room just like the one at Esplora. When two people stand on op- posite sides of this room, one will appear much smaller than the other. This optical illusion is created by building a room with the floor and ceiling at an angle, but which tricks your mind into believing that both sides of the room are straight! All this and more can be dis- covered during our Christmas Trail. Visitors can enjoy the brand new science show Lights, Camera, Action as they delve deeper into the fascinating world of film production. Weatherology is another sci- ence show which is being of- fered during this time. It takes visitors on a journey around the world and explores Earth's weather and climate to find the perfect Christmas destina- tion. Visitors can also participate in the 12 Days of Christmas science show and sing along as the Christmas Carol is given a scientific twist in a show full of colourful reactions, music, and mind-boggling demon- strations. Esplora are firm believers that the science centre is for everyone, for visitors of all genders, abilities, social and cultural backgrounds and, most importantly, for visitors of all ages. Everyone who is young at heart is sure to enjoy a visit to the science centre. This De- cember, Esplora Interactive Science Centre will therefore be encouraging families to partner up with older adults in their families for a visit. The Milied man-Nanniet pro- motion is available until 22 December 2021. Visitors who present the Kartanzjan or a 60+ ID Card at our reception will be able to bring along up to two children for free, aged 0 to 15.
