16 NEWS maltatoday | SUNDAY • 19 DECEMBER 2021 LUKE VELLA MENTAL health nurse Chris- topher Siegersma has been ap- pointed the first Commissioner for the Welfare and Develop- ment of Prisoners by the Home Affairs Ministry. Siegersma, 38, has years of experience in the medical and social field. He was responsible for multidisciplinary teams in the mental health sector, name- ly wit the Crisis Intervention and Home Treatment team and Young People's Unit. On Friday Home Affairs Min- ister Byron Camilleri presented the conclusions of the inquiry into the Correctional Services Agency, which made 32 rec- ommendations for reform in the sector. The inquiry was launched after a streak of deaths and suicides in prison, under former director Alex Dalli. Siegersma is a nurse by profes- sion and holds a Masters degree from the University of Mal- ta in mental health. Currently he is reading for a PhD at the Queen Margaret University of Edinburgh. He is specialised in psychological trauma related to criminal acts. As Commissioner, Siegersma will be overseeing the imple- mentations of the recommen- dations proposed from the In- quiry Board. The prison reform also in- cludes a strengthening of the prisons monitoring board, serv- ing as an arbiter between the Commissioner and the prisons agency. A rehabilitation centre will be set up to accommodate 140 inmates in five wings, fo- cusing on specialised care. A family room outside the Corradino Correctional Facility will also be set up, where family members can visit the inmates in a more welcoming setting. More opportunities for ac- credited training for prisoners will be provided, with lectures and courses will be delivered in prison. The release of inmates from prison, will take place during the day, instead of late in the evening, in order for the former prisoners to be able to settle down and make arrangements before the night kicks in.
