Malta Chamber and EY Malta reaffirm cooperation PROVISIONAL estimates for 2020 in- dicate that the contribution of Gozo and Comino region to national Gross Do- mestic Product (GDP) at market prices accounted to 4.3 per cent or €559.9 mil- lion. In 2020, the Gross Value Added (GVA) at basic prices in the regions of Malta, and Gozo and Comino was estimated at €11,326.6 and €506.9 million respectively; reflecting corresponding decreases of 5.7 and 5.6 per cent over 2019. Malta region Most industries registered decreases in GVA during 2020. e industries of wholesale and retail trade; repair of mo- tor vehicles and motorcycles; transpor- tation and storage; accommodation and food service activities (G, H and I) regis- tered the largest drop of 34.7 per cent over 2019 and accounted for 13.9 per cent of the total GVA. e industries compris- ing public administration and defence; compulsory social security; education; human health and social work activities (0, P and Q) contributed to the largest share of the GVA. ese industries reg- istered a growth in GVA of 2.9 per cent when compared to 2019. Gozo and Comino region Similar to Malta region, the majority of industries registered decreases in GVA in 2020 when compared to the previous year. e industries comprising whole- sale and retail trade; repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles; transportation and storage; accommodation and food service activities (G, H and I) registered the largest drop of 29.7 per cent over 2019 and accounted for the second high- est share of the GVA at 16.0 per cent. e industries of public administration and defence; compulsory social security; education; human health and social work activities (0, P and Q) accounted for the highest share of the GVA at 28.2 per cent and have registered an increase of 4.4 per cent over 2019. Regional Gross Domestic Product In 2020, GDP at market prices in the regions of Malta, and Gozo and Comino was estimated at €12,510.2 and €559.9 million respectively, correspond- ing to 95.6 and 4.3 per cent of national GDP at market prices. During 2020, GDP per capita at market prices de- creased in both regions. e per capita GDP at market prices for the Malta region as a percentage of the national was 102.5 per cent while that of the Gozo and Comi- no region stood at 63.9 per cent. e per capita regional GDP does not reflect the income available to the private house- holds of each respective region, but it strictly relates to the economic activity prevailing in each of the regions. Population and Employment In comparison to 2019, total population in Malta region increased by 0.3 per cent, whereas that in the Gozo and Comino re- gion increased by 0.4 per cent. In 2020, the majority of industries in the Malta region registered increases in employment when compared to the previous year. e largest percentage in- creases resulted in the economic activities relating to construction (F); and financial and insurance activities (K), registering growths of 6.3 and 6.2 per cent respec- tively. Similarly, almost all industries in the Gozo and Comino region registered increases in employment during 2020. e largest increases were registered in the economic activities relating to pro- fessional, scientific and technical ac- tivities; administrative and support service activities (M and N) and infor- mation and communication (J), which growth rates were of 14.7 and 11.3 per cent respectively.
