maltatoday | SUNDAY • 9 JANUARY 2022 12 COMMERCIAL Melita recognised for significant contribution to sustainability MELITA Limited is one of the winners at the Smart & Sus- tainability Business Awards. The awards, or-ganised by the Ministry for the Economy and Industry, recognise businesses that have made a signif-icant contribution to sustainable de- velopment by applying sustaina- ble practices across their entire operation. The monetary prize awarded to Melita as part of the award will be donated to The Melita Foundation, to support its ongoing support environ- mental projects. Randolph Said, Chief Finan- cial Officer at Melita Limited, said, "Melita has placed sus- tainability at the core of its operations over the past few years. We have launched a whole host of initiatives to re- duce carbon emissions and to invest in international renewa- ble energy projects. As a result, Melita will be carbon neutral in 2022, one year earlier than previously planned. Of course, all of us, individuals and com- panies, need to consider how we can reduce our carbon foot- print. It's encour-aging, there- fore, to see awards like this being organised to recognise those who are taking action but more importantly to encourage others." The initiatives which Melita Limited has taken to become carbon neutral include; install- ing solar panels at the Melita Data Centre, investing in the company's mobile and fixed networks to reduce electrici- ty consumption, installing in- telligent lighting and cooling systems across sites and retail outlets and switching to elec- tric vehicles. The Gasan Foundation partners with Zibel on an educational waste campaign THE Gasan Foundation recent- ly collaborated with Zibel to launch a social media aware- ness and educational campaign aimed at highlighting ways and best practices on how to mini- mise environmental impact in our daily lives. Among the many threats to our environment is the belief and assumption that somebody else is going to fix the problem. Environmental NGOs like Zi- bel are working to change this attitude and to raise awareness that it is our individual and collective duty to take respon- sibility of what is happening now and to take ownership of the problems happening on the planet. Tuesday Tips is a long running series of educational social me- dia posts created and conceived by Zibel on several useful tips while also shedding light on key environmental issues. Examples range from tips on how to re- duce plastic at home, shopping at the supermarket sustainably, recycling tips, ways to make a home eco-friendlier, and much more. Such simple changes do mitigate environmental prob- lems as the average size of an individual's carbon footprint in the EU is equivalent to around eight tonnes of CO₂. The Foundation is all about embodying a commitment to positively impact our com- munities and making direct positive contributions. With this kind of partnership, the Foundation also hopes to bring NGOs like Zibel closer to phi- lanthropists and businesses. h the Gasan Foundation is that these tips will remind and en- courage the public on ways to make small changes which will gradually make a difference. And to encourage individuals to adapt to a better lifestyle for the present and future genera- tions "This collaboration with such an energetic environmental NGO is exactly the kind of in- itiative the Foundation seeks to support" said Mr. Joe Ga- san, Foundation's chairperson. "Their dedication to tackling waste and educating the public creates a natural fit between our organizations, and the environ- mental ethos that we strive to create and support both within our organization and our com- munities."
