maltatoday | SUNDAY • 23 JANUARY 2022 7 HISTORY Malta celebrates national day at Dubai Expo 2020, with programme showcasing Maltese culture AMY MICALLEF DECESARE MALTA celebrated its National Day at Expo 2020 Dubai yester- day, with a varied programme that emphasises our rich histo- ry and culture. The festivities, which took place at the stage of nations, in- cluded performances such as a contemporary dance trio, cho- reographed by Francesca Abe- la Tranter, songs from Maltese artists Pamela Bezzina and Des- tiny and a percussion group by Alex Debono. Silvio Schembri, minister for the economy and industry was welcomed by Sarah bint Yousif Al Amiri, the minister of state for advanced technology and said: "Malta's pavilion design brings the vibrant Maltese cul- ture to life at Expo 2020, as it showcases the country's diverse population and economy and the opportunities available in various fields, such as tourism, innovation and technology, thereby attracting foreign direct investments." "The UAE and Malta have shared a strong bond for many years," he continued. "We hope that through oppor- tunities fostered at Expo 2020 and Malta's active engagement, we will witness expanded and enhanced bilateral cooperation in new areas of mutual interest." Schembri said that the Malta Pavillion serves as a showcase for the close affinity between Malta and the United Arab Emirates, adding that he was pleased that the expo served as an opportu- nity to enhance Malta's relation- ship even further, as well as the country's ties in the political, economic and cultural spheres. What is the Malta pavillion? The Malta Pavillion invites vi- sotors to experience the essence of a nation, through a free-flow- ing journey that touches on the island's history, culture and shared future. Each stage of the journey further reveals why the Maltese are renowned for their hospitality and friendliness. National and Honour Days at Expo 2020 Dubai are mo- ments to celebrate each of our 200-plus international partic- ipants, shining a light on their culture and achievements and showcasing their pavilions and programming. Running until March 31, 2022, Expo 2020 Dubai has invited visitors from all over the world to join the making of a new world in a six-month celebra- tion of human creativity, inno- vation, progress and culture.
