3 LETTERS & EDITORIAL maltatoday | SUNDAY • 6 FEBRUARY 2022 Mikiel Galea Letters & Clarifications Ray of hope in the PN INTEREST among the electorate in Malta has, understandably, been on the wane. However the future of the PN, which for years had been the natural party of government, not to mention its leader, where it struggled to make an impact where it counts, seems to be getting up some gain. Seeing new candidates like James Aaron Ellul, Joseph Grech and Alex Borg seems that there is a ray of hope. The party needs to give more time and exposure to these candidates. The party needs to give opportunities for these young fellows to flourish. Bernard Grech must really hold dis- cussions with young adults. He needs to understand. He need to listen. He needs to give unbiased opportunities to all, something which in my opinion the PN is lacking. This trio must be given a chance, as most see a bright future ahead. As a citizen who once supported with all my might the Nationalist Party, I still have my heart at the right place, however the party must see what these young bright people will bring to the party. I am full of hope, however the administration must give them an honest opportunity. Maria R. Borg Bonnici Ħamrun Futile invocations? GOD help me in my effort to furnish a partial answer to the why of a pandemic and suffering and also to keep my letter as short as possible. For in truth nobody can provide a reasonable rationale for the devastating calamity seemingly negating the goodness of God. If we enter into the spirit of the first sorrowful part of the Apocalypse, we can expect calamities any moment be- cause the universe is passing through the final hours before delivery being a pregnant creation. There will be fam- ines, pestilences and earthquakes. All these are the beginning of birth pains and painful contractions are in the forecast, "In such circumstances keep your head and don't panic" (Jesus). We have been warned several times. The glorious and triumphant last part reveals the salvation, power, the king- dom of our God and the authority of Christ. That's why St. John wrote this book,to encourage the Christians after such a gruesome upheaval. For prayers to be heard, the suppli- ant must have a good disposition,hu- mility and meriting any plea he asks for including guilt which needs repa- ration and the righting of wrong. The modern world practically ignores guilt as responsibility for the violation of moral laws. Unfortunately we are living amongst crises, hot and cold wars and this universal health disorder without any sense of guilt. Legislation of disturbing looser moral laws are on the agenda of most governments of the world. In many countries Christians are an endangered species, persecuted and even killed. Reparations and righting of wrong are nowhere to be seen. May be this one of the reasons why prayers are not heard. This letter is already treading on prohibited grounds taxing the editor's space so I'd better revert to a lighter vein by quoting an amusing parable by Bishop Fulton J. Sheen: A husband and wife went to the doctor. The doc- tor asked the husband "What is wrong with you, sir?"; He said: "I eat too many cherries"; The wife said: "At the bot- tom of cocktail glasses." As he blamed the sickness on the cherries and not on alcohol, so too many in our modern world forget that perhaps our world headache may be due to the way we have conducted ourselves before our fellow man and before God rather than to our moral cherries. Sin brings adversity. And adversity is the expression of God's condemnation of evil. In disobeying God's moral law, we do not destroy it – we only destroy ourselves. For example,I am free to misuse the law of gravitation by jump- ing off a building, but in doing so I kill myself – and the law still stands. John Azzopardi Zabbar Clarificiation It was incorrectly referred to in the edi- tion of 6 February 2022 (Diriye hired by subcontractors before fatal work acci- dent) that a police officer was suspended in connection with this case. The Malta Police Force replied with answers to this newspaper's questions on 29 January 2022, but this newspaper failed to in- clude the replies. The error is regretted. No police officer was suspended in con- nection with the mentioned case.
