maltatoday | SUNDAY • 6 FEBRUARY 2022 11 ALMANAC Nature Notebook 800. Northern Gannet NOT the kind of bird that'll visit your garden, unless, that is, your garden abuts a windswept Atlantic seacliff! How can so remote an image reconcile with our docile sunny isles. The northern gannet (M. sula) is a scarce sight in Malta and the only sightings we get are made by our more intrepid birdwatchers who brave the wintry weather and sit ħalf frozen for a few hours on an exposed shore facing the sea. Through their spotting scopes they scan the heaving grey horizon and sometimes they spot this large 'white cross' of a bird quartering the waves on long stiff outstretched wings. That would be a gannet, a great 'tick' by local birding standards. This bird's stronghold is the North Atlantic, and while gannets migrate southward for winter, few enter the Mediterranean – our sea is probably too poor in fish for this magnificent fisher.
