Yesterday, council minority leader John Baptist Camilleri (PN) said the council had dis- cussed the issue of the yacht ma- rina planned by Transport Malta with Borg himself, in January. "In this meeting, Minister Borg said that he was not aware of the local council's August 2021 mo- tion against the call for investors in a yacht marina in the bay of Marsaskala, which also states that there should be no private concession for a yacht marina," Camilleri said. He said Borg acknowledged that the motion categorically rejects all plans for a yacht marina, and proposed that the Council re- consider a motion that does not completely exclude concession of space to the private sector. "He pledged that Transport Malta would not move forward with the second phase of the pro- cess until the local council's final position is made clear," Camilleri said. He said the local council had met again and unanimously agreed to uphold its August mo- tion and formally sent notice of this to Borg and Transport Malta. The motion stated: "The Local Council is against the proposal for a yacht marina in Marsaskala, presented in Transport Malta's pre-qualification document and condemns its publication with- out consultation with the Mar- saskala community. The local council demands that this docu- ment be withdrawn immediately and that plans for a yacht mari- na in Marsaskala be abandoned completely. "Transport Malta should launch immediate discussions with the local council, with res- idents of Marsaskala and with the local associations, for the organisation of existing berths, for the protection of the cultural and social customs of the locality, the protection of the marine en- vironment and for safeguarding the swimming zones of the bay." Present for the press confer- ence yesterday were a group of residents, fishermen, feast and fireworks enthusiasts, and activ- ists. In a statement, they said they believed the only remaining path for Borg and Transport Malta was that of withdrawing the call for a yacht marina in Marsaskala. Moviment Graffitti said that Borg had referred to the possi- bility that Transport Malta in- tervenes without private sector investment to repair the break- waters and organise existing berths. "Since the publication of Trans- port Malta's plans last August, people have made it very clear that they do not want the priva- tisation of Marsaskala Bay. Res- idents and organisations have warned that Transport Malta's plans for a bay consumed by pon- toons, yachts and expansive land reclamation will destroy marine life, threaten the Natura 2000 site of il-Magħluq and destroy the cultural, social and recrea- tional activities which take place around the bay in the heart of Marsaskala." Graffiti said that now that the Council had upheld its first mo- tion to categorically oppose these plans, all further plans for a yacht marina must be halted and the proposal withdrawn. David Spagnol, from a local fireworks society, spoke of the importance of the sea's ecology and for projects that respect the community's identity. A fisherman, Jason Genovese, said that fishermen relied on the bay in order to make their living. "With the marina we would not have any space to work and many fish would die. I ask the minister, are you listening to us? It's like we don't exist. We need to work and earn a living." Joanna Galea, a resident, said Marsaskala represented a break from the hustle and bustle of the rest of the island, and stressed the importance of the creek and the bay, which she said were the "cheapest form of stress relief". "Such serenity will be taken away by the marina. I don't want to sell my property. I want to live here. Nothing can replace the natural beauty of the bay," Galea said. "Politicians are always telling us that quality of life is not meas- ured by economic development alone, so why the marina?" res- ident Daniel Desira said. "I call on the Prime Minister to rethink and abandon the project." Skalini speak with one voice as council tells Borg to scrap marina plans Top: say it with words - residents of Marsaskala are affixing stickers to their doorbells warding off politicians and candidates in the 2022 elections who are not against the yacht marina plans Right: Nationalist councillor John Baptist Camilleri said transport minister Ian Borg claimed he was unaware of the council's August 2021 motion against the marina; the council has reiterated its support poof the motion and communicated to the ministry and Transport Malta
