maltatoday | SUNDAY • 13 MARCH 2022 11 ALMANAC Nature Notebook 804. Green Lacewing MALTA is tiny and jam-packed with people. What areas we haven't built we turned into farmland, with very little space left for nature. For this reason, most of our fauna is small, and one such ephemeral beauty is the green lacewing, a tiny green ant-like insect. This crea- ture's pièce de résistance are its rather large wings: completely trans- parent but with this intricate, lace-like mesh of veins. Lacewings (M. insett tal-bizzilla) are largely nocturnal, which makes them even harder to spot. They visit flowers to feed on pollen and nectar, but their young have a very different diet: they are voracious aphid pred- ators! And that of course places lacewings firmly in the farmer's and gardener's good books. A Welsh orchestra has dropped music by Russian composer Tchaikovsky from a concert because of the Ukraine war. Cardiff Philharmonic Orchestra said it would be "inappropriate at this time" to perform the composer's music after Russia's invasion of Ukraine. An anonymous collector in the US was the lucky bidder in the end. Instead, it will perform works by John Williams, Dvorak and Elgar.
