maltatoday | SUNDAY • 13 MARCH 2022 13 HSBC Malta to increase support for JAYE Malta Foundation THE HSBC Malta Foundation is supporting the Junior Achieve- ment Young Enterprise (JAYE) Malta Foundation with a grant of US$350,000 over the next two years. The Funds, which were allocated following a successful application by the HSBC Malta Foundation to HSBC's global 'Fu- ture Skills Impact Fund', will help JAYE to continue bringing entre- preneurship and financial literacy into the communities of the Mal- tese islands via the JAYE Local Council's Project 2021 – 2023. Within the framework of the project, JAYE Malta will train local businesses to become fa- cilitators of knowledge in their communities. In turn, these businesses, with the support of local communities, will de- liver upskilling and reskilling sessions to various sectors of the community, such as school children, the elderly, and peo- ple who are out work, in sever- al localities in Malta and Gozo. Delivery of the educational ses- sions will be carefully tailored to the audience's age and back- ground. The main topics of the train- ing sessions will include, but will not be limited to, financial management and literacy skills, with an emphasis on credit scoring and creditworthiness and their relevance to individ- uals' life choices. Simon Vaughan Johnson, the CEO of HSBC Malta, said: "HSBC is delighted to be able to support this important ini- tiative in our community. Fi- nancial literacy is an essential life skill that supports key de- cisions throughout the various stages in a person's life. The HSBC Malta Foundation has worked closely together with the JAYE Malta Foundation for many years to nurture the financial literacy and entrepre- neurial skills of people in our local community and we are honoured to be contributing significant additional support today to ensure that we provide access to the financial skills which everyone needs to lead a successful life." Chris Vassallo Cesareo, the Chairperson of JAYE Malta Foundation, said: "As a mem- ber of Junior Achievement (JA) Worldwide, we have always worked hard to foster econom- ic development by improving the understanding of business, economics, employability, and entrepreneurship. HSBC Malta and the HSBC Malta Foundation have been partners in our efforts for many years, and this project, with HSBC's support, will reach people who are most in the need of acquiring skills that are essen- tial to improve their lives." The Future Skills project was officially launched on 2 March 2022 and will run for the com- ing two years. Visit https:// futureskills.jayemalta.org/ for more information. TeamAtlas collected €3,300 as part of their annual Christ- mas donation, and that amount was doubled by Atlas to €6,600. In total, Adam's Memory Fund collected €10,500 during this period. Founder Angele explained that the money col- lected was donated to different organizations which provide care to vulnerable children and their families. She said: "This was quite an emotional experience, but it has given us so much back. Knowing that we put a smile on a child's face during the Christmas period has given us some of the love we are so longing for following the demise of our young child." "I want to thank all who showed us support through their donations, and to TeamAtlas, who I am a proud member of, for once again stepping up and showing support to us," Ange- le said. Adam's Memory Fund donated €5,000 to the Maltese Ursuline Sisters of St. Angela Merici, which runs nine homes around Malta and cares for poor and abandoned babies and young children. Puttinu Cares, a well-known charity that provides care and accommodation to the families of children seeking cancer treat- ments abroad, received a €3,000 donation from the funds that were raised. Angele and her husband Clive also spent €1,400 on toys which were donated to the Rainbow Ward play area at Mater Dei. Another €1,100 were given to The Remembering Fran Foundation, a voluntary organization which works to provide sick children with medication and equipment they need, as recommended by consultants at Mater Dei Hospital. NGO Smil- ing with Jerome, which was set up in memory of cancer victim Jerome Frendo, also received a €600 donation from Adam's Memory Fund. The European Maritime and Fish- eries Fund 6.2.3 DC-MAP project, part-cofinanced by the EU, started in January 2020 and ran until Decem- ber 2021. The collection of fisheries data un- der the DC-MAP ensures the imple- mentation and support of the Eu- ropean Common Fisheries Policy (CFP). The scope of the CFP is the conservation and sustainable exploitation of fisheries resources from the environmental, economic, and social perspectives. The data collection aimed to pro- vide reliable information on the state of fish stocks, provide advice on the sustainable management of fish stocks upon which the industry depends and ensure the conservation and management of the marine envi- ronment. Malta collected its data on the basis of its National Work Plans. Through this operation, fisheries data were collected in a number of ways: da- ta was compiled from commercial fisheries (full- time and part-time professional fishing vessels) via logbooks, sales notes; effort and fleet characteristics; and through so- cio-economic surveys of the fisheries, aquaculture and processing sectors. Sampling also included biological data collection including length, age, growth and maturity in econom- ically important species through market samples, onboard scientific observations on commercial fishing vessels, and through the annual sci- entific survey at sea MEDITS (Inter- national bottom trawl survey in the Mediterranean). Locally, the DC-MAP is imple- mented by the Fisheries Research Unit within the Department of Fish- eries and Aquaculture of the Ministry for Agriculture, Fisheries, Food and Animal Rights (MAFA). The data collected within the DC-MAP frame- work was then submitted to end-us- ers, including the European Commis- sion, Regional Coordination Groups, GFCM and ICCAT via specific data calls which serve directly for the im- provement of fish stock assessments and advice by these scientific bodies. In addition, several national reports and official statistics are periodically published. This project is co-financed by the European Maritime and Fisheries Fund 2014 to 2020. As from the beginning of this year onwards, the project has been super- seded under the support of the Euro- pean Maritime, Fisheries and Aqua- culture Fund (EMFAF).
