maltatoday | SUNDAY • 17 APRIL 2022 9 ALMANAC Nature Notebook 810. Mayfly THEY are neither the giants nor the show-offs of the insect world. Mayflies go through life with hardly anyone noticing them. Well, if your adult lifespan was a few hours, how much impact would YOU expect to make? Mayflies (M. ninfa) are ephemeral, wispy little in- sects, little bigger than a mosquito. They spend most of their life as youths and only come of age at the very last moment! Mayflies live up to a year as larvae crawling on the bottom of freshwater ponds, nibbling pond vegetation. They are semi-transparent to avoid detec- tion by predators, such as voracious dragonfly larvae. Ath the end of their youthful stage, they grow wings and flutter out of the pond, sometimes all at the same time and in massive numbers. Then they quicky pair up, mate, lay a few hundred eggs in the pond and – phew just in time – die! The 2020 event was postponed, and last year elements such as guided group tours could not take place. Smith has apologised for his actions and resigned from the Academy.
