maltatoday | SUNDAY • 17 APRIL 2022 15 COMMERCIAL Spark your curiosity at Esplora! WHEN we are asked to imagine what a scientist looks like, we tend to imagine a person wear- ing a white lab coat in a lab en- vironment, experimenting with chemicals. While chemists are important to help us under- stand and improve the world around us, the roles of scien- tists are varied in nature, and the scientists themselves look very different from one anoth- er! At Esplora, rather than using the term 'scientists', we speak of STEM professionals to encom- pass and celebrate all profes- sionals who work in the various fields of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM). But what does it take to work in STEM? And what does a STEM professional look like? Science is quite vast, and its applications even more so. Let's take biology as an example. Peo- ple who have an avid interest in the human body or the natural environment tend to gravitate towards subjects such as biol- ogy. But what careers come to mind when you think of biol- ogy? Careers in the field vary, from surgeons and radiologists to lab analysts, biomedical sci- entists, neurologists, and phar- macists. Some work in health research to try and cure illness- es such as cancers, while others help to protect and conserve the natural environment by opting to become environmental biol- ogists. What about technology and engineering? This field has ex- panded so much lately that its scientific application is some- what endless thanks to the technological advancements made over the latest century. Technology has become em- bedded in all aspects of our lives. We've become dependent on its processes and tools, as its development keeps improving mankind. And what about mathematics? You often hear people wonder- ing how maths features in their everyday lives. Did you know that an architect and a mason apply various mathematical methods to design structures such as arches and staircases? Mathematics is applied in a large number of jobs and situ- ations, sometimes without us realising it. If you are a very curious per- son and are interested in ex- ploring the various aspects and applications of STEM, then KurżitàJiem is the event for you! Esplora Interactive Science Centre is excited to present its upcoming event called Kurżità- Jiem, which celebrates the di- versity in STEM and research taking place locally around the Maltese Island. Visitors who visit Esplora between the 19th and the 24th of April will be able to meet with people who have a passion for science and who apply scientific skills in their work and daily lives. From drone experts to others who focus on microscopic species, marine plants, and pollution, KurżitàJiem aims to not only break stereotypes but also to in- stil scientific curiosity. KurżitàJiem offers a space for all families, teenagers, adults, and any curious human being to discover the valuable research work that is being carried out locally. Through a range of hands- on activities and interactive demonstrations, visitors will have the opportunity to appre- ciate the impact that science and research have on our lives and our natural environment.
