maltatoday | SUNDAY • 22 MAY 2022 14 EYEWITNESS Spring chickens THE National Fancy Poultry and Pigeon Show once again was organised at San Anton Gardens after an absence of two years due to the COVID-19 pandemic. James Bianchi managed to capture the expressions of some of these 'star birds' at the exhi- bition held last week, in collab- oration with the environment ministry and Ambjent Malta. Formerly known as 'Fur and Feather', the exhibition was organised for the first time in 1935. This year over 800 birds were on exhibition, from quails, ducks, geese, pigeons, doves, chickens, turkeys and even pheasants. The event is considered to be the largest fancy poultry and pi- geon exhibition of the year both in numbers and breed varieties. These 800 birds will be exhib- ited by more than 30 dedicated breeders. A great importance was given to the Black Maltese chicken, a local breed which the Malta Fancy Poultry and Pigeon Club said such breed should not be lost. "Over the years our vol- untary organisation has been promoting the rearing of such breed to increase in population numbers and genetic pool," the MFPPC said.
