maltatoday | SUNDAY • 22 MAY 2022 11 ALMANAC Nature Notebook 815. Ringed Plover FOR many birds the shoreline is their only world. Such birds – col- lectively known as waders – live out their life patrolling the edges of sandy, muddy, pebbly or rocky shores, wading in the shallows on long (or longish) legs and probing the mud with their (usually) long beaks for worms, molluscs, crustaceans or tiny fish. Over 40 wader species have been recorded in Malta, of which the ringed plover (M. monakella prima) is one of the regulars, if never in large numbers. It's an accomplished shorebird even though it lacks the long bill and legs. Like other waders, ringed plovers would dearly love to check out our beaches, but the masses of holidaying humanity keep them away – which is why protected areas like Għadira or Salina nature reserves are vital for such birds to rest and refuel. Despite their essential work, farmers experience several challenges and are not always supported, especially by important policies that are shaping the food and farming landscape. Through this exhibition with photographs of Darrin Zamit Lupi, we want to tell the story of ten Maltese farmers, who have been chosen for their environmentally-friendly farming practices and re- veal some of the faces behind Maltese produce. We invite you to learn about Malta's farmers and embark on an exploration of their genuine passion for agriculture, which, in the face of several struggles, serves as the fuel that keeps them going. A GOOD WEEK Good Week/Bad Week A BAD WEEK Sir Billy Connolly says he never sets out to win awards, but the Scottish comedy legend is to be given one of Britain's biggest entertainment honours. Netflix has made about 150 staff redundant, a month after the streaming service said it was losing subscribers for the first time in a decade. The redundancies, announced by the entertainment giant on Tuesday, will mainly affect its US office in California. They account for about 2% of its North American workforce. The 79-year-old will received this year's Bafta Fellowship at the Virgin Media Bafta TV Awards. Netflix said the job losses were due to the slump in the company's revenue.
