maltatoday | SUNDAY • 12 JUNE 2022 11 ALMANAC Nature Notebook 818. Common Swift A flock of swifts zooming and screaming overhead is one kind of screaming that's music to my ears! Swifts are the undisputed mas- ters of the air and it's no exaggeration to state that these birds live in the air because they actually do: they feed, mate, even sleep on the wing (what else is there?). They only land to nest, which they do in cracks in cliffs or tall walls, as long as there's a nice clear drop just outside the nest entrance. Before 2008 the common swift (M. rund- un) just migrated over Malta, but that year a few pairs set up home and raised a family in house ventilators in Tas-Sliema and one or two other places. Since then, swifts have spread to other areas and today they can probably be safely classed as regular – if not common – annual breeding birds. A rare success story in a land that's generally belligerent towards birds.
