NEWS 7 maltatoday | WEDNESDAY • 15 JUNE 2022 Improving tap water taste by increasing reverse osmosis output JAMES DEBONO TAP water is safe to drink but its taste is too metallic in certain areas, making it unpalatable for many who prefer bottled water. But the Water Services Cor- poration wants to change this state of affairs by improving the taste and getting tap water on every dining table. To achieve this, the WSC will be reducing chloride levels, which gives water a metallic taste, by 20% during 2022. And to do this, the state company will increase the production of water from reverse osmosis plants by 14%, while reducing groundwater extraction by the same rate. The WSC's annual report says that 64% of tap water in 2022 will be derived from sea water. Tap water in households is composed of a blend of ground water extracted from the water table and water derived from the sea. The chloride level of blended water currently stands at an av- erage of 500 parts per million (ppm). Although this has no ill effects on human health, it im- pacts on the taste of water thus resulting in greater consump- tion of bottled water. Groundwater accounted for 41% of Malta's drinking wa- ter in 2021, down from 56% in 2010. It is projected that in 2022 the share of ground wa- ter in the blend will be further decreased to 36% as 64% of tap water will be derived from RO. "We believe that our tap wa- ter needs to be available on each and every dining table. This will significantly reduce plastic use and waste: 'reduce' is the most crucial tactic in sustainable growth," the report states. The increase in the share of RO water comes at a cost, since the plants consume hefty amounts of electricity. How- ever, ground water extraction also requires the use of elec- tricity-powered pumps but is generally less taxing. One po- tential risk not mentioned in the report is increased depend- ency on sea water which also increases vulnerability to risks like oil spills. But the annual report outlines concrete plans to increase en- ergy efficiency and thus reduce the WSC's carbon footprint. Apart from greater invest- ment in solar energy, the report refers to a concentrated effort in energy management. It also refers to specific energy reduc- tions through the replacement of pumps, upgrades in the electrical control panels and air blowers and modifications to energy hungry processes to minimise the carbon footprint associated with the production, distribution, waste collection and treatment of water. The newly-constructed RO plant at Ħondoq in Gozo will be using pumping equipment that consumes 20% less ener- gy than the current equipment used in other RO plants. The report shows that despite the increased share of RO wa- ter expected in 2022, the cor- poration's electricity bill will be reduced from €19.5 million to €19.2 million. During 2021, reverse osmo- sis production was increased by 8,300 cubic metres a day by adding a new train with a capacity of 4,500 cubic meters daily at Pembroke, and another new train at Lapsi with a capac- ity of 3,800 cubic meters. Production capacity will in- crease considerably once the Ħondoq plant in Gozo is fully commissioned and more up- grades in the Malta plants are finalised. While extraction from groundwater sources will con- tinue to decrease in the coming years, the number of boreholes will actually increase. This is because a number of boreholes that have not been in use for many years will be recommis- sioned to relieve the stress on other parts of the island. In 2021, three groundwater sources were reactivated, while in 2022, twelve more boreholes are planned to be reactivat- ed. Twenty-five boreholes will eventually be reactivated, thus increasing groundwater sourc- es by 30% with lower total ex- traction. The corporation also intends to increase potable water re- serves across the country, thereby improving the security of supply. The Naval Reservoir at Luqa will be re-commis- sioned by mid-2022. WSC losing less water The report also indicates a sharp reduction in leaks and unbilled water. The amount of unbilled water referred as Non Revenue Water (NRW) has been on the decline over the last five years following a peak of over 43%. NRW has been successfully reduced from 39% in 2020 to 35.9% in 2021. Leakages have been reduced to a record low level, result- ing in a 1.4% reduction in the production of water over the preceding year. Improvement in metering to ascertain that water consump- tion is more accurately billed, results in an overall improve- ment of 3.6% over the preced- ing year.
