maltatoday | SUNDAY • 3 JULY 2022 4 MUSIC HISTORY SINGER-SONGWRITER Jamala will be performing at a peace concert in Malta on 8 July at Malta Enterprise grounds in Pieta. Since the war in Ukraine, the winner of the Eurovision Song Contest Jamala has been campaigning for her country and has performed in peace concerts across the world. The One Love, Celebrating Peace event will be held in aid of Ukrainian citizens who fled to Malta because of the war. Ja- mala will be joined by a strong line up of Maltese singers for what is expected to be a celebration of unity, solidarity and peace. Funds will also be raised for the building of 'Becs' Junior Secondary school in Ethiopia, in memory of 15 year old Re- becca Zammit Lupi who died in 2021 from a rare form of cancer. The event is being organised as part of Malta Enterprise Corporate Social Re- sponsibility 2022 programme. Supporting partners are the Malta Tourism Authori- ty and Malta Development Bank. Jamala brought her victory to Ukraine with her song 1944 — a personal story inspired by her great-grandmother, who lost a child during the deportation of the Crimean Tatars. Upon winning the con- test, she was given the People's Artist of Ukraine award. Among the singer's other awards are the Ukrainian National Award Person of the Year (2009), the ELLE Style Award (2010, 2012) and numerous awards for her music at YUNA Music Award (2016, 2017, 2019). After Russia invaded Ukraine, Jamala became the voice of the Ukrainian people outside her homeland. Once she evac- uated her children, the singer started to fight for victory on her own front. Day by day, country by country, she takes part in charity events, concerts and TV shows, raising funds for refugees, children and the Ukrainian army. Her music blends soul, jazz, electronica and pop genres beautifully and smoothly. Her sound and her live performance are the hallmark of Ukraine's contemporary music scene. The singer started her career at the age of nine, recording an album of songs for children. She has graduated from the National Music Academy named after Tchaikovsky in Kyiv, majoring in opera singing. Jamala was going to make a ca- reer in classical music, however her stun- ning victory at the International Contest of young singers The New Wave festival (2009), changed her path. Since her debut album For Every Heart (2011), she has never stopped experimenting with her sound, opening herself up to the listener anew each time. So far, she has released seven studio albums, a number of EPs and singles, all of them inspired by her personal feelings and experiences, whether it's a song with DakhaBrakha, a collaboration with Brian Todd or a soundtrack to the movie Mr. Jones. Tickets for the concert can be purchased from VisitMalta. HERITAGE Malta's harbour cruises are back, as the focus this summer shifts towards World War II and its effects on the Grand Harbour, Marsamxett Harbour and their environs. The World War II theme was chosen for this year's cruises since 2022 marks the 80th anniversary of the awarding of the George Cross to Malta by King George VI. With plenty of fortifications, military in- frastructure and other important structures, the Harbour Area was an obvious target for the Axis pow- ers during the war. This year's har- bour cruises will therefore retrace the historic events which occurred between 1940 and 1943 and which could be described as the Second Great Siege of Malta. Historical information during the tours will be provided by Matthew Balzan, Heritage Malta's Principal Curator – Fortifications. There will be two harbour cruises – one on Tuesday 19th July and another on Thursday 21st July. The cruise boat will set sail from Sliema Ferries (Luzzu Cruises Point) at 6.30pm. Ticket holders are to be at the jetty half an hour before. Both cruises will be 75 minutes long. Ticket prices are as follows: Adults – €17; senior citizens and students – €15, children and Her- itage Malta members – €10. Tickets may be bought online from https://heritagemalta.mt/ store/e1076/ and from https:// heritagemalta.mt/store/e1077/ Heritage Malta's harbour cruises to focus on effects of World War II on environs A celebration of peace featuring Ukrainian Eurovision winner Jamala
