maltatoday | SUNDAY • 3 JULY 2022 14 COMMERCIAL Encouraging participation at MCAST Open Day The zero-waste future programme THE Malta College for Arts, Science, and Technology (MCAST) successfully host- ed prospective students and their families at the College's Main Campus in Paola during an open day event held on 24 June 2022. Over 3,000 visitors attended the open day enthu- siastically seeking information about education and training opportunities. Aspiring students had the opportunity to witness first- hand the MCAST campus and explore the college facilities, including labs, workshops, and simulators. This experience helped visitors discover the dy- namic learning environment that awaits them next October. The college prides itself in of- fering a truly inclusive and sup- portive environment and this was reflected in the open day activities. All MCAST Institutes held in- formation talks at the College's new Resource Centre. Attend- ees enthusiastically participat- ed by asking questions about various courses, the teaching approaches, and potential ca- reers they could land within the industry. Tours were organised at the new library with its im- pressive collaborative learning spaces. Together with their lecturers, current MCAST students fol- lowing different courses within all six Institutes also showcased their work and projects. This allowed prospective students to understand what they would be doing when following vocation- al courses at the College. The programme included drone swarm demonstrations, science experiments, Virtual Reality ac- tivity in Agribusiness, hair and beauty shows and student pro- ject exhibitions. MCAST's career guidance ad- visors also explained and pro- vided individual guidance. By brainstorming potential work roles and jobs, advisors could guide the various suitable learn- ing paths available at MCAST. Moreover, information about application procedures and sti- pends was also offered. MCAST currently has a full- time student population of over 7,000 individuals and offers 190 in diverse areas, spanning from level 1 certificates to Bachelor's Degrees, Master's Degrees and a Doctorate. THE Zero Waste Future program launched in 2018 aims to address the serious issue of land and ma- rine litter and was coordinated by the international NGO AKTI Project and Research Centre in partnership with GSD Marketing Ltd (local bottlers and distribu- tors of the Coca-Cola Company in Malta); Vittoriosa local coun- cil and MHRA. The program was funded by The Coca-Cola Foundation and is aligned with the Coca-Cola Company's global commitment for "A World With- out Waste". Through this programme, 50 HoReCa establishments were enrolled in the Responsible Coastal Business Network where they were trained to implement practices to minimize their waste production and thus min- imize the potential for marine pollution from their operations and their customers' activities. Local authorities were also en- gaged and on-the-go recycling bins in Vittoriosa were installed resulting in the collection for re- cycling of over 40 tons of PMD (Plastic packaging, Metal pack- aging, Drinks cartons). The programme also raised awareness amongst the local population and tourists on re- cycling and circular economy principles reaching over 1 mil- lion interactions through social and traditional media. This was achieved through an innovative Decalogue and the Guide of Good Practices. Several beach and seabed cleanups were or- ganized that saw the partici- pation of 500 individuals that collected 1.6 tons of waste from various localities. For the first time in Malta a waste characterisation study was carried out in cooperation with the Vittoriosa Municipal- ity. This included 30 sampling points over 5 sampling periods! and categorized the black bag contents for household, offices, and catering establishments. Following the completion of the first phase in June, the program is being extended and will run up till July 2023. The local councils of Cospicua and Senglea will be participating in a waste charac- terization in their areas as well as support the enrollment of new members to the Network.
