maltatoday | SUNDAY • 10 JULY 2022 11 ALMANAC Nature Notebook 822. Corn Bunting Older BirdLife Malta members will remember an old 1980s MOS post- er titled The Breeding Birds of Malta. Featured among those precious few species was the corn bunting (M. durrajsa), a chunky sparrow-like bird. Not a bird anyone would go wow! over, but a birdwatcher would be overjoyed today to see or hear one. You see, up until the 1980s, corn buntings were relatively widespread and their characteristic call was a familiar sound in open countryside. Little did we suspect that in just 20 years that jangly call would become a rarity. So what hap- pened? The culprit seems to be modern changes in farming practices, not least the massive increase in use of dangerous pesticides. Corn buntings have in fact declined sharply right across Europe – I fear it won't be long before we cross this species off our list of breeding birds. Come join the weekly YEAH!
