maltatoday | SUNDAY • 31 JULY 2022 7 ALMANAC Nature Notebook 825. Little Stint OF all the 50+ species of shorebirds recorded in Malta, the little stint (M. tertuxa) is one of the smallest. It is no bigger than a sparrow, but there the resemblance ends. You only need to look at its beak to tell that this bird leads a very different life from the sparrow. You don't see little stints hopping about for scraps in town squares, or perched in trees. These are not birds of sheltered places but creatures of wide open beaches, mudflats and estuaries. Apparently inured to the savage rigours of coastal conditions, they live their life pattering along the water's edge, often chasing tides as they probe the mud for worms and other invertebrates. BirdLife's nature reserve at Salina is a good spot to look out for these tough little survivors, even now in high summer. Friends of the Earth Malta is hiring!
