5 NEWS 1.9.2022 MALTA Enterprise will be hosting an event on the Foreign Subsidies Regu- lation on Friday 16 September at 9am at Malta Enterprise Conference Hall in Pieta'. e event - e Impact on the Euro- pean economy of the EU Regulation on Foreign Subsidies - will be presided over by Minister for Environment, En- ergy and Enterprise Miriam Dalli and Malta Enterprise CEO Kurt Farrugia. e panel discussion will see the par- ticipation of Eddy De Smijter, from the European Commission's DG Compe- tition, MEP Dr Alfred Sant, the Mal- ta Chamber President Marisa Xuereb among others. e Foreign Subsidies Dossier aims to address distortions created by subsidies granted by non-EU govern- ments to companies who are operat- ing in the EU's single market. e Reg- ulation establishes a framework which will allow the European Commission to investigate, monitor and remedy to these instances. e event will consist of a debate based on the practical implementation and potential outcomes of the Foreign Subsidies Dossier. e discussions will aim to address questions and concerns regarding the dossier, amongst which the prevalence of a level playing-field in the EU's internal market, the poten- tial impact on the EU's attractiveness for FDI and how the dossier was per- ceived by non-EU countries. is event is being organised as part of a series of discussions designed by the EU Affairs Unit at Malta Enter- prise to keep the industry and stake- holders abreast on leading EU dossi- ers. THE seasonally adjusted monthly unemploy- ment rate for July 2022 stood at 2.9 per cent, at par with the previous month, data issued by the National Statistics Office has shown. For the month under review, the unemploy- ment rate for males was 3.1 per cent while the rate for females stood at 2.6 per cent. e unemployment rate during July 2022 for persons aged 15 to 24 years (youth unemploy- ment rate) was 9.8 per cent while the rate for those between 25 and 74 years stood at 2.2 per cent. e 2.9% unemployment rate for July 2022 is at par with the previous month and decreased by 0.4 percentage points when compared with July 2021. During July 2022, the number of unem- ployed persons was 8,325, with the 25 to 74 age group being the major contributor to the overall level of unemployment. e seasonally adjusted number of unem- ployed youths amounted to 2,680, whereas those aged between 25 and 74 years stood at 5,645. For July 2022, the unemployment rate for males was 3.1 per cent, unchanged when compared with the previous month. e rate for females stood at 2.6 per cent, down by 0.1 percentage points when compared to June 2022. e unemployment rate for persons aged 15 to 24 years (youth unemployment rate) was 9.8 per cent, while the rate for those aged be- tween 25 and 74 years dropped to 2.2 per cent. DURING a reception on Au- gust 30, U.S. Chargé d'Affaires Gwendolyn "Wendy" Green welcomed over 80 women, who applied for the U.S. Depart- ment of State's 2022 Acade- my for Women Entrepreneurs (AWE). is year, the U.S. Em- bassy has partnered with e Malta Chamber of Commerce, Enterprise, and Industry to im- plement the second iteration in Malta of this global entrepre- neurship program. e AWE program provides women entrepreneurs around the world with the knowledge, networks, and access needed to start and scale successful busi- nesses. Participants will have the op- portunity to engage in a compe- tition, pitching business plans they develop through the AWE training for seed funding to in- vest in their businesses. In brief comments, Green said, "I am incredibly proud to launch this global entrepre- neurship program in Malta for the second year running fol- lowing the great success of last year's program." S he noted that this year's pro- gram attracted an even larger cohort of women with a love of innovation and a dream to re- alise. "Women entrepreneurs like you are a growing market force and have a critical role to play in building dynamic, innovative economies," she said. "is is what the Academy for Women Entrepreneurs is all about." In her remarks, Marisa Xuer- eb, President of e Malta Chamber of Commerce, Enter- prise, and Industry, said, "We want to continue to empower women in the entrepreneurial world and give them the neces- sary tools to succeed and grow in their own right." She said the Malta Chamber partnered with the U.S. Embas- sy because of the fundamental role that women in business can play for the growth of the econ- omy and development of their wellbeing. AWE supports the U.S. gov- ernment's National Strategy on Gender Equity and Equality aimed at advancing women's economic empowerment glob- ally. Implemented in nearly 90 countries, AWE has helped more than 16,000 women en- trepreneurs around the world to grow their businesses and adapt to new economic realities under COVID-19.
