2 NEWS 15.9.2022 TOTAL inbound tourists for July 2022 were estimated at 273,646, while total nights spent amounted to 2,274,414. During the month under review, a to- tal of 247,029 inbound tourists visited Malta for holiday purposes, and 11,092 tourists came for business purposes. e largest share of inbound tourists were aged between 0 and 24 (36.7 per cent), followed by the 25-44 age brack- et (36.2 per cent). Italian, French and German residents made up 37.3 per cent of total inbound tourists. e largest share of guest nights (83.6 per cent) was spent in rented accom- modation establishments. e average length of stay of total inbound tourists stood at 8.3 nights. Total tourist expenditure reached €275.0 million. e average expendi- ture per night was estimated at €120.9. January-July 2022 During the first seven months of 2022, inbound tourists amounted to 1,168,741, while the total nights spent nearly reached 8.3 million nights. Total tourist expenditure was esti- mated at €970.9 million. Total expend- iture per capita stood at €831, decreas- ing from €946 in 2021. COVID-19 recovery Comparison can be made between 2019 and 2022 July data to quantify the recovery of inbound tourism from the effects of the pandemic. e year 2019 will be used here as the reference year for the pre-COVID-19 situation. Total inbound tourists for the month under review have reached 89.9 per cent of those registered pre-COV- ID-19, and the associated nights spent made up 94.3 per cent of the respective figure. e highest recovery can be seen in the 0-24 age bracket (106.9 per cent) and the lowest recovery is associat- ed with the 65+ age bracket (75.7 per cent). e segment of inbound tourists vis- iting Malta for other purposes experi- enced a better recovery (95.0 per cent) than that of tourists visiting Malta for business (90.1 per cent) and holiday (89.6 per cent) purposes. Total tourist expenditure has reached 96.5 per cent of its respective pre-COVID-19 value. IN July 2022, the seasonally adjusted in- dustrial production fell by 2.3% in the euro area and by 1.6% in the EU, com- pared with June 2022, according to esti- mates from Eurostat, the statistical office of the European Union. In June 2022, in- dustrial production increased by 1.1% in the euro area and by 1.0% in the EU. In July 2022 compared with July 2021, industrial production decreased by 2.4% in the euro area and by 0.8% in the EU. Monthly comparison by main industrial grouping and by Member State In the euro area in July 2022, com- pared with June 2022, production of capital goods fell by 4.2%, durable con- sumer goods by 1.6% and intermediate goods by 0.8%, while production of en- ergy rose by 0.4% and non-durable con- sumer goods by 1.2%. In the EU, production of capital goods fell by 3.2%, durable consumer goods by 1.6% and intermediate goods by 0.8%, while production of energy rose by 0.7% and non-durable consumer goods by 1.0%. Among Member States for which data are available, the largest month- ly decreases were registered in Ireland ( 18.9%), Estonia (-7.4%) and Austria (-3.2%). e highest increases were ob- served in Lithuania (+6.5%), Sweden (+5.8%) and Malta (+4.2%). Annual comparison by main industrial grouping and by Member State In the euro area in July 2022, com- pared with July 2021, production of capital goods fell by 5.4%, intermediate goods by 1.8% and non-durable con- sumer goods by 1.1%, while production of energy rose by 1.1% and durable con- sumer goods by 1.4%. In the EU, production of capital goods fell by 3.5% and intermediate goods by 1.4%, while production of durable con- sumer goods rose by 0.9%, non-durable consumer goods by 2.1% and energy by 3.1%. Among Member States for which data are available, the largest annual decreases were registered in Ireland ( 23.7%), Estonia and Slovakia (both -6.4%) and Belgium (-5.1%). e high- est increases were observed in Bulgaria (+17.6%), Denmark (+12.0%) and Po- land (+10.3%).
