maltatoday | SUNDAY • 25 SEPTEMBER 2022 11 ALMANAC Nature Notebook 833. SEDGE WARBLER ALL 10,000 species of birds are marvels of evolution. Many are spec- tacular, with striking colours and bizarre feathers. Others are more demure, opting for a lifestyle that merges with their surroundings. Most European warblers fall in this second category: small birds with muted colours, with maybe a small highlight. About 40 warbler species occur in Malta, ranging from common year-round residents to extreme rarities. Among the regular – if not too common – spring and autumn visitors is the sedge warbler (M. bufula tas-simar). Its habitat is wetlands with thick shrubbery where it forages for insects while hidden from view. The best sign of its presence is usually its call. A good look at a sedge warbler through binoculars will show up its lovely black and white eyestripe, no doubt its pièce de résistance.
