maltatoday | SUNDAY • 2 OCTOBER 2022 11 ALMANAC Nature Notebook 834. Qawra Point QAWRA Point is a tiny, wave-battered island right at the very tip of the Qawra-San Pawl conurbation. Yet this windswept dot of land has recently been declared a protected area. Why all the fuss? It's the lo- cation: Qawra Point lies at the entrance to Salina Bay, just 1km from Salina nature reserve. Many tired birds flying in from a relenteless sea-crossing aim for the sheltering saltpans, many of them protected species like herons, stilts and flamingoes. On their way into the re- serve these birds often fly over Qawra Point. And that's exactly were a bunch of hunters regularly lie in wait, happily snuffing out the life out of any bird that comes within range. Until now, that is. With its new protected status, Qawra Point will no longer be a death trap, at least not a legal one. Well done. Become a BirdLife member Talk by Dr David Vella: Rediscovering Oneself Through a Story of Conscience 10 October Place: University of Malta Valletta Campus This talk seeks to introduce an alternative identity model that redefines our authentic self through a self-story about conscience. It conceives our original self as committed to a call to live a good life. Our fulfillment is seen as intimately related to our care for others and their political and civic institutions. To realize this self, the practice of five values is emphasized that are promoted, though in an incomplete and distorted manner, by today's commercial life-strategies. These values help us attune to what is singularly foreign in our experiences while provoking ways to reconcile it with our established worldview. A GOOD WEEK Good Week/Bad Week A BAD WEEK Ryan Reynolds sent the internet into a frenzy when he revealed Hugh Jackman would return as Wolverine in the next Deadpool film. The Canadian actor has been open about his desire for the adamantium-clawed anti-hero to join his foul-mouthed mercenary on-screen. Comedian Trevor Noah has announced he is standing down as host of The Daily Show. Noah said he was "filled with gratitude for the journey" but that there was "another part of my life that I want to carry on exploring". Previous films have made references to Wolverine - with Jackman making a post-credit cameo in Deadpool 2. The 38-year-old has hosted the satirical news and talk show since taking over from Jon Stewart in 2015.
