maltatoday | SUNDAY • 16 OCTOBER 2022 9 ALMANAC Nature Notebook 835. Autumn Buttercup AS summer loses its arid grip on the land and rains drench the dormant seeds awake, the lure of the outdoors becomes attractive as the ground turns gradually green. Among the flowers you may meet on an autumn walk is the delicate autumn buttercup. It won't dominate the rocky garrigue where it grows because it's a short, ground-hugging species. But the bright yellow flowers, all standing erect – if only a few centimetres tall – more than compensate for its modest stature. Several species of wild buttercup grow in our coun- tryside but the autumn buttercup (M. ċfolloq), as its name states, is the one you're likely to see in flower at this time of year. Squat down for a closer look and you'll notice the petals are glossy, an unusual (and endearing, I think) characteristic Friends of the Earth Malta being Relaunched Friends of the Earth Malta is relaunching our sorely missed Community Garden. A community garden as a simple and sustainable form of agri- culture is a piece of land that is cultivated together by a group of people. The harvest belongs to all participants. This is a great opportunity to get nutritious fresh fruits and vegetables without having to go to a su- permarket, while connecting with others. The activities could include cleaning the space, planting new trees, watering plants, harvesting them if needed, creating signs for the plants, removing dry plants, and com- posting them. Join us for the first session today, from 4pm till 8pm. A GOOD WEEK Good Week/Bad Week A BAD WEEK Queen have revealed a previously unheard, deeply emotional song they recorded with Freddie Mercury in 1988. Face It Alone, which the late singer recorded during sessions for 1989 album The Miracle, was given its premiere by BBC Radio 2's Ken Bruce on Thursday. An upcoming episode of the YouTube talk show The Shop: Uninterrupted has been scrapped after Kanye West allegedly used "hate speech and extremely dangerous stereotypes" in an interview. "We did find a little gem from Freddie, that we'd kind of forgotten about," drummer Roger Taylor said about the track in June. Fox removed those segments before broadcast, but the footage was leaked to technology website Motherboard.
