maltatoday | SUNDAY • 27 MARCH 2022 OPINION 3 LETTERS & EDITORIAL maltatoday | SUNDAY • 20 NOVEMBER 2022 Mikiel Galea Letters & Clarifications Overspeeding disgrace SPEEDING in Malta is a national dis- grace, and the dangers are there for all to see. The past weeks has seen a chronicle of death and injury on Mal- tese roads. The reason is simple: there is weak policing on the abuse of dangerous driving. There are hardly any police checks on drunk-driving; and there is no proper patrol of the high-speed motorways in which illegal racing takes place in the small hours of the night. That the Maltese love their cars is well and good enough. But dangerous driving causes deaths, the lost lives of which leave so much pain in the hearts of those who mourn them. No sort of 'justice' can be served to heal the pain of relatives who have lost their loved ones to the reckless driving of others. But to the rest of us, the authorities can start giving us peace of mind: no bail for drunk-drivers who cause fatal accidents and no bail for reckless driv- ers on manslaughter charges. Mary Agius Mosta Amazing grace AT the risk of a current monopoly of your letters column, I venture to have this letter published. During these last 12 years (perhaps in other papers) I have always been in search of the truth and defence and propagation of the Catholic Church and God. But this letter could be a continuation or sequel of my previous letter "God's proselyti- zation". A tinge of faith can clarify and alle- viate the complexity of this pain and death and a loving God dilemma. In faith there is enough light for those who want to believe and enough shad- ows to blind those who do not (Blaise Pascal). The greatest tragedy that occurred on Calvary resulted in the opening of heaven's gate. Not by any stretch of imagination could mankind ever dream of witnessing such a metamor- phosis and powers of understanding God's chemistry. God is not a mythical Santa Claus with a big sack and lots of presents. He is the creator, redeemer and father who is alive for ever and who loves us most dearly and lavishly than we could ever possibly know. Down to earth, sweetness, gentle- ness, meekness, patience, long-suffer- ing, charity kindness, will all be natural to the Christian who is a partaker of the nature of Christ, following such tragedies. Psalm45 sings of our unshaken trust in the Lord: "God is our refuge and our strength, an ever-present help in distress. Therefore we fear not, though the earth be shaken and mountains plunge into the depths of the sea. The Lord of hosts is with us; our strong- hold is the God of Jacob. Come behold the deeds of the Lord, the astounding things he has wrought on earth. What a picture of amazing grace!" John Azzopardi Zabbar
