2 maltatoday | SUNDAY • 4 DECEMBER 2022 NEWS LUKE VELLA FIVE men were hospitalised and one remained missing, af- ter a building in a construction site at the Corradino industrial estate collapsed on Saturday morning. Footage circulating on social media showed that at around 9:30am, a side of the building on the ground floor started to give way, leading to the col- lapse of the three-storey struc- ture within a total of five sec- onds. At the time, six men were in- side the building. Five men - three Albanians, one Maltese and another Bos- nian - were pulled out from the beneath the rubble in a delicate rescue operation involving tens of Civil Protection personnel. They were hospitalised and two of them, including the Maltese national, were certi- fied to have sustained grievous injuries, while the other three had critical injuries. The sixth person, a 20-year- old man, remained trapped under the rubble and rescuers worked all day to try and locate him. It is understood that the young man was not working on the site but had just arrived to deliver some tools to his colleagues. CCTV footage ap- pears to show him entering the building eight minutes before it collapsed. Until the time of going to print he had not yet been found but relatives on site said his mobile phone was not responding. At one point, a crane was brought on site as rescuers re- moved parts of the standing structure that was unstable to avoid further collapse. Home Affairs Minister By- ron Camilleri, who was on site shortly after the incident, said dogs from the CPD and drones were being utilised to help in the search for the vic- tims. Eyewitnesses said the collapse happened while workers were pouring concrete at the site and footage posted to social media shows a worker hanging onto the hose pipe of a con- crete pumper after the building beneath him collapsed. Magistrate Marse-Ann Far- rugia is leading an inquiry into the incident and police investi- gations are ongoing.
