maltatoday | SUNDAY • 5 FEBRUARY 2023 4 CULTURE Calling all Maltese students: global doodle competition set to take creativity across the globe THE innovative global compe- tition where art and technology meet to empower a new genera- tion of artists is back. In Red Bull Doodle Art, participants let their minds wander and draw doodles – those spontaneous creations that happen when pen meets pa- per and the imagination runs free. In this "phygital" experience involving both the physical and digital realms of art, winners from Malta will be invited to the World Final in Amsterdam, the Nether- lands, where the 2023 Red Bull Doodle Art winner will be chosen by a panel of renowned experts. The application window is now open until 24th March, 2023. History The pen-on-paper concept of Red Bull Doodle Art dates back to the very first edition in 2012, and across the decade since, the com- petition has remained true to that inclusive concept, while evolving to expand the horizons of partici- pants through virtual galleries and constantly evolving technology. In 2014, World Finalists creat- ed doodles on a digital platform, while the 2017 World Finalists brought their doodles to the world of virtual reality. The 2023 edition marks the first time that Red Bull Doodle Art will be bringing doo- dles to the blockchain through NFTs (non-fungible tokens) cre- ated by artists and creatives. 2023 Format Red Bull Doodle Art 2023 will see World Final participants doo- dling in a new tech realm: NFTs. It all plays out in four phases. 1. Application phase: In Mal- ta, Red Bull Doodle Art be- gins at one of the number application events, where participating students and creatives will put pen on paper to see where their imagination takes them. 2. Selection phase: On 30th March, the work of be- tween 20 and 30 finalists will be displayed in an exhi- bition. From those, a panel of experts will select the Maltese winner based on the criteria of creativity, ar- tistic skill and the way the doodle expresses a love for life. 3. World Final: From 25 to 28 May 2023, the World Final will bring together all the national finalists globally for a three-day immersive experience in Amsterdam in the Netherlands. This will feature workshops, exclusive "phygital" crea- tive sessions and the an- nouncement of the global winner of Red Bull Doodle Art 2023. How to Enter Red Bull Doodle Art is open to everyone 18 years of age and older who is a current resident of Malta. Imagine sitting back with your morning coffee and a joint only to be interrupted by the cream of Malta's anti-drug squad bran- dishing a pistol in your face. The ambitious Inspector and her veteran sergeant are convinced Danny is a druglord and ferret through Danny's flat in search of hard evidence. In the meantime, lovable police rookie Byron and Redent are ordered to hang on to Danny like limpets. This is what happens to Scot- tish expatriate in Malta, Danny, in this hilarious new farce, 'L-Ar- rest ta' Danny Weed' by Alfred Buttigieg. With its razor-sharp humour, this rollicking, ram- bunctious play calls out police corruption and its enablers in the political class. The play will be performed at the Blue Box Theatre, Msida on 3, 4, 5, 10, 11 and 12 March 2023. Taking part are Audrey Scerri, Chris Spiteri, James Ryder, Mat- thew Sant, Simon Curmi u Sean Briffa. The play is directed by Michael Fenech. This project is supported by Arts Council Malta.
