maltatoday | SUNDAY • 5 FEBRUARY 2023 7 ALMANAC Nature Notebook 852. Bracket Mushroom MOST mushrooms look like your average Smurf residence, but many species also come in weird shapes. Among these is a group known as bracket mushrooms (M. lixka). They are called that because they grow as a disk-like shelf (= bracket) on tree trunks and on dead logs. Some are small, dull coloured and easy to overlook. Others are more flam- boyant, like the one pictured (it's called chicken-of-the-woods – don't ask!) The mushroom that we see is the fruiting body of the fungus and therefore only a small part of the organism; the main part of the fungus is underground or, in the case of bracket mushroom, inside the wood from which it derives nourishment. By the way: fungi are not plants. It's true they were traditionally lumped with the plants but nowadays they enjoy a separate kingdom of their own. Climate Induced Migration The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) estimates that even if the two-degree limit is met, as many as 280 million people will be displaced by as early as 2050, both within their countries and across borders. The problem of climate refugees points to a double injustice in an intolerable way. While people from the countries of the Global South, which contribute least to climate change, are the first to be affected by its consequences, the countries of the Global North, as the main polluters, have so far denied the existence of climate refugees. For this reason and because climate change is happening now and on a global scale, it's crucial to raise awareness of the problem. People are fighting for both their homes and their survival. With our Environmen- tal Film Festival at the Valletta Design Cluster, held this weekend, which is dedicated to the theme of climate-induced migration, we are contrib- uting to this. The two remaining documentaries screened today Anote's Ark and Delikado both powerfully depict the fight for climate justice!
