4 NEWS 16.2.2023 IN December 2022, the seasonally adjusted industrial production fell by 1.1% in the euro area and by 0.4% in the EU, compared with November 2022, according to estimates from Eu- rostat, the statistical office of the Eu- ropean Union. In November 2022, in- dustrial production increased by 1.4% in the euro area and by 1.2% in the EU. In December 2022 compared with December 2021, industrial produc- tion decreased by 1.7% in the euro area and by 0.4% in the EU. The annual average industrial pro- duction for the year 2022, compared with 2021, increased by 0.9% in the euro area and by 1.9% in the EU. In the euro area in December 2022, compared with November 2022, pro- duction of intermediate goods fell by 2.8%, durable consumer goods by 1.4%, non-durable consumer goods by 1.0% and capital goods by 0.4%, while production of energy grew by 1.3%. In the EU, production of inter- mediate goods fell by 2.4%, durable consumer goods by 0.7% and capital goods by 0.3%, while production of non-durable consumer goods grew by 1.0% and energy by 1.3%. Among Member States for which data are available, the largest month- ly decreases were registered in Ire- land ( 8.5%), Luxembourg (-5.2%) and Lithuania (-4.0%). The highest increases were observed in Denmark (+13.5%), Portugal (+4.1%) and Hun- gary (+3.8%). Annual comparison by main indus- trial grouping and by Member State In the euro area in December 2022, compared with December 2021, pro- duction of energy fell by 9.3%, inter- mediate goods by 6.9% and durable consumer goods by 1.3%, while pro- duction of capital goods remained stable and production of non-durable consumer goods grew by 7.9%. In the EU, production of energy fell by 9.5%, intermediate goods by 6.2% and durable consumer goods by 2.1%, while production of capital goods grew by 1.7% and of non-durable con- sumer goods by 11.1%. Among Member States for which data are available, the largest annual decreases were registered in Slovakia ( 13.1%), Estonia (-11.5%) and Luxem- bourg (-8.4%). Imports from the rest of the world stood at €247.5 bn, a rise of 8.7% compared with December 2021 (€227.7 bn). As a result, the euro area recorded a €8.8 bn deficit in trade in goods with the rest of the world in December 2022, which was the same as in De- cember 2021. Intra-euro area trade rose to €212.8 bn in December 2022, up by 9.4% compared with December 2021. In January to December 2022, euro area exports of goods to the rest of the world rose to €2 877.8 bn (an increase of 18.0% compared with January-De- cember 2021), and imports rose to €3 192.5 bn (an increase of 37.5% com- pared with January-December 2021). As a result the euro area recorded a deficit of €314.7 bn, compared with a surplus of €116.4 bn in January-De- cember 2021. Intra-euro area trade rose to €2 726.4 bn in January-Decem- ber 2022, up by 24.4% compared with January-December 2021. European Union The first estimate for extra-EU ex- ports of goods in December 2022 was €218.7 billion, up by 10.3% compared with December 2021 (€198.2 bn). Imports from the rest of the world stood at €230.8 bn, up by 8.5% com- pared with December 2021 (€212.8 bn). As a result, the EU recorded a €12.1 bn deficit in trade in goods with the rest of the world in December 2022, compared with -€14.6 bn in December 2021. Intra-EU trade rose to €326.7 bn in December 2022, +8.5% compared with December 2021. In January to December 2022, ex- tra-EU exports of goods rose to €2 572.0 bn (an increase of 17.9% com- pared with January-December 2021), and imports rose to €3 003.2 bn (an increase of 41.3% compared with Jan- uary-December 2021). As a result, the EU recorded a defi- cit of €431.2 bn, compared with a sur- plus of €55.1 bn in January-Decem- ber 2021.
