Roberta Metsola makes second visit to Ukraine EUROPEAN Parliament Presi- dent Roberta Metsola is back in war-torn Ukraine for a second visit in less than a year. She arrived in Ukraine on Fri- day evening in an announced visit and met with Ukraine parliament president Ruslan Stefanchuk. "Good to be back in Ukraine. With those brave people who in- spired the world. With those he- roes who refuse to give in. With those who sacrificed everything for our values. With Europeans whose home is in our European Union," Metsola wrote on Twit- ter. Metsola promised Stefanchuk stronger ties between the Euro- pean Parliament and Ukraine. During Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy's visit to the European Parliament last February, Metsola had reiterated Europe's support of Ukraine and said that Member States should consider providing the country with long range systems and jets. There seems to be no end in sight for this war, more than a year after Russia invaded sover- eign Ukraine. On Friday, the USA announced a new $400 million security aid package for Ukraine that includes a variety of ammu- nition types. Metsola made headlines in March 2022 when she was the first high-level EU official to set foot in Ukraine and among the first to advocate for its EU mem- bership. She was the first high-level EU official to visit Ukraine after Rus- sia invaded the country, doing so at the end of March 2022. She was also among the first to call for Ukraine to be given a pathway to eventual EU membership. On Saturday, Metsola partici- pated in the Wreath-Laying Cer- emony at the Memorial to Fallen Soldiers with H.E. Ruslan Stefan- chuk, Speaker of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine. "Emotional moment today as I laid flowers on behalf of the peo- ple of Europe to remember all those killed - including Yuriy Ruf, who was killed by Russian mor- tars on 1 April. It was especially poignant for me as that was the day I first visited Ukraine. We will remember them," Metsola wrote on Twitter. Zelenskyy thanked Metsola for her support in the first days of the war and for adapting the resolu- tion to support Ukraine's EU can- didate status. "Ukraine aims to complete the implementation of the European Commission's recommendations as soon as possible and start ne- gotiations on joining the EU al- ready this year," Zelenskyy wrote on Instagram. Roberta Metsola poses for a selfie with Ukrainian PM Volydymyr Zelenskyy and the entire Ukrainian parliament Nurses on warpath and warn of action THE Malta Union of Midwives and Nurses is planning indus- trial action in the coming week after negotiations over a sectoral agreement hit a brick wall. MUMN informed its members that it had no other option but to declare an industrial dispute and issue directives across the whole health and elderly sectors next week. The union said it was in "com- plete shock" when its 37-page were whittle down to two pages. "As MUMN, we were sincere- ly hoping that the Government would be on board and under- stand the duress the nurses and midwives are facing on a daily basis... This two-page document must have broken every world record for the shortest, insignif- icant document to the nursing and midwifery profession world- wide," MUMN said. The directives will apply to all nurses and midwives, includ- ing top-ranking ones, with the MUMN warning its members over any strike-breakers. "Those remaining selfishly impassive would be giving a clear signal that there is no interest in the sectoral agreements and would therefore be excluded."
