(MaltaToday, 5 March 2023), in essence a true and tragic story, I am reminded of the landmark film 'Or- anges and Sunshine' that deals with the identical exodus of thousands of UK kids to Catholic 'schools' in Aus- tralia during the same period. The poor parents were enticed to send their kids to the promised land full of oranges and sunshine. The film is based on the true sto- ry of Margaret Humphreys, a social worker from Nottingham who un- covered the scandal of 'home chil- dren', a scheme of forcibly relocating poor children from the UK to Aus- tralia and Canada. Margaret reunites estranged families, who are situated in Australia and the UK, and brings worldwide attention to the cause. Deported children were promised "oranges and sunshine" but they got hard labour and life in Catholic insti- tutions in Western Australia where they suffered physical and sexual abuse (Wikipedia). Finally, a reminder that the Maltese migrant kids are remembered in the most poignant memorial at Valletta Waterfront in the shape of a paper ship. Dr Alfred Quintano Via email I refer to letter "Changing Malta" (MaltaToday, Letters, 5 March). Since humanism stands for the building of a more humane society through an ethics based on human and other natural values with the complete elimination of supernatural divine views of reality, it is obvious that it is not theistic. But Christian Colombo could have promoted his beyond-religion asso- ciation in just two words: militant atheism. So he had nothing else to do but draw a realistic picture of an is- land where its moral fibre has been considerably weakened; incredible religious ignorance is rampant; the morality of religion does not inspire our laws; crime is on the increase, and the parish not the centre of our lives. It is easy to propagate a new men- tality on such fertile grounds. He missed a golden opportunity. In fact he was cock-a-hoop and so enthusiastic in seeing Malta sliding into this amoral lifestyle that he un- wittingly forgot to slip a humble ap- peal to join his club. No! Thank you! And before I forget, I would advise Christian to change his name. John Azzopardi Zabbar Tragedy of Maltese child migrants Militant atheism
