maltatoday | SUNDAY • 26 MARCH 2023 7 ALMANAC Nature Notebook 859. Caspain Tern TERNS are the lightweight cousins of the gulls. Like gulls they have long pointed wings, they're mostly white and grey, and they too are largely associated with the sea. Eleven species of tern have been re- corded in Malta, and queen among them is no doubt the Caspian tern (M. ċirlewwa prima). It's unmistakable not only because it's the largest tern but that massive red bill is quite impossible to miss. Cas- pian terns are not particularly common in the Med, as they mostly nest way up around the shores of Sweden and Finland, where their fish prey is plentiful. But come autumn they travel south to spend the winter around milder shores. So one sometimes turns up to warm the hearts of birdwatchers, as happened some days ago at Sali- na. Incidentally, terns have a special significance for BirdLife: they're the bird in our logo! IPCC-Report: Call for urgent climate action The IPCC is an intergovernmental body tasked with advancing scientific knowledge on climate change. It informs governments about the cur- rent state of knowledge by reviewing all relevant scientific publications. For this reason, IPCC reports play a key role in the annual negotiations on climate change. The report, which was presented on Monday, sum- marises the dramatic situation and the risks associated with the climate crisis based on current scientific findings and shows how the global community must respond. It is now proven beyond doubt that humanity is heating up the planet. The earth has warmed by 1.1°C compared to pre-industrial levels. Fur- thermore, climate change is playing an increasing role in extreme weath- er events. "Almost half of the world's population lives in regions that are highly vulnerable to climate change. In the last decade, deaths from floods, droughts and storms were 15 times higher in highly vulnerable regions," adds Aditi Mukherji, one of the 93 authors. Climate change is also becoming the most important cause of species extinction as warm and extreme weather destroying entire landscapes.
