Police officers patrolling 13 December avenue in Marsa had arrested the man on suspicion of drug possession last Sunday. According to prosecuting police Inspec- tor Kathleen Zerafa, when the police ap- proached the public gardens in Triq Patri Felicjan Bilocca, the man had noticed them and attempted to run away. The officers apprehended him shortly af- terwards, however. As a result of the chase a few sachets containing a green substance had fallen out of his jacket and were later re- covered by the police. 40 more sachets were found in his jacket pockets. Under interrogation, the suspect initially claimed that the drugs were intended for his own use, but later confessed to selling them. The sachets contained synthetic mar- ijuana and cannabis, with 22 and 18 packets respectively, said the inspector. The man told the police that he planned on using the money to travel to Italy. He did not have any identification documents in his posses- sion, bar a photograph of an Italian ID card, explaining that he had lost his passport and wallet in which he kept his documents. The man was identified as Nuhu Moham- med, a 32-year-old builder from Ghana. In court this morning, Mohammed said that he is currently unemployed. The magistrate informed Mohammed that he was charged with having been in possession of marijuana and synthetic drugs in circumstances denoting that they were not intended for his personal use at the time of his arrest on 16 April at around 4:45pm. He was also accused of disobeying lawful police orders. The defendant replied that he understood the charges, after which the magistrate in- formed the man of his right to silence. Defence lawyer Alfred Abela informed the court that the defendant was not going to answer questions about his place of resi- dence at this stage. A not-guilty plea was entered on Moham- med's behalf, with the lawyer informing the court that the defence would not be re- questing bail at this stage. The court ordered that the acts of the case be remitted to the registrar in order to be assigned to a magistrate according to law. Man arrested after Marsa chase was carrying 40 sachets of drugs, court told A man who allegedly threat- ened food bank workers with a knife, while drunk, has been remanded in custody. Abdirizaq Hussein Galle, a 33-year-old Somali national residing at the open centre in Marsa, was charged with car- rying a knife or cutting instru- ment in public without a police licence, insulting and threaten- ing a third party, breaching the peace and causing a public dis- turbance while drunk and inca- pable of taking care of himself. He was taken into custody on 17th April at around 9:15pm near the Millennium Chapel in St. Julians. Inspector Brian Xuereb told duty magistrate Leonard Caru- ana how the police had been informed that a man had pulled a knife on a person working at the Wishing Others Well cen- tre, which is the social assis- tance arm of the Millennium chapel, after being refused en- try due to his apparent drunk- en state. The court was told how the defendant became aggressive and argumentative and at one point, had pulled out a knife from his trousers. After leav- ing the chapel, the defendant was spotted by the police near the Portomaso roundabout and taken into custody after being identified by the person who he had threatened with the knife. The police found the knife, which was recovered from a nearby bush. The defendant was also found to be carrying a long metal food thermometer on his person, which was de- scribed in court as "electronic and non-functional." During his interrogation, Galle denied having had a knife, the inspec- tor said. The man pleaded not guilty to the charges against him. His le- gal aid lawyer, Martin Fenech, requested bail for his client, ar- guing that the majority of the charges were contraventions, and that Galle resided in the open centre in Marsa. However, Inspector Xuereb objected to the request, cit- ing the lack of a fixed address and the ongoing investigation into the object which Galle had been carrying, which the police suspect to have been used to force entry into private prop- erty. After hearing both parties' submissions, the court turned down the request for bail. Man charged over knife incident at food bank
