maltatoday | SUNDAY • 18 JUNE 2023 7 ALMANAC Nature Notebook 871. Common sandpiper IF you're on a quiet rocky shore and hear this persistent pss-wss-wss- wss! pss-wss-wss-wss! you're probably sharing space with a common sandpiper (M. pispisella). You probably won't spot it as it's small and its dark speckled back merge with the rocks. But if you sit awhile and happen to be carrying binoculars, a slow scan of the shoreline should show him up. Although camouflaged the bird is thankfully also rarely still, constantly bobbing its tail and poking around with its longish bill. It's one of several wader species that visit our islands, usually staying a few days to rest and refuel before resuming its jour- ney north or south depending on the season. But in protected areas like Għadira, Is-Simar and Salina nature reserves one or two com- mon sandpipers sometimes stay entire months. So here's for more protected areas. Greatest Days, named after one of the group's biggest hits, is the film adaptation of the stage musical which opened in 2017. Nine women have sued disgraced comedian Bill Cosby, accusing him of using his "enormous power, fame and prestige" to target them for sexual assaults. The women say the former actor and comedian drugged and assaulted them in homes, dressing rooms and hotels in Nevada between 1979 and 92. Aisling Bea and Jayde Adams star in the big- screen version, which has received mostly three and four-star reviews. The state has recently scrapped its time limit for filing such claims.
