Malta defines exclusive
economic zone in bid
to expand economy

MALTA is set to define its own exclu-
sive economic zone as parliament de-
bates legal changes making it possible
for developing economic activity out-
side its territorial waters.
e proposed changes to 39 different
laws were put forward by the govern-
ment and enjoy the Opposition's sup-
port.
Prime Minister Robert Abela said this
development will allow the country to
expand and diversify its economy with-
out taking up land.
e next step after the amendments
are approved, Abela said, is for govern-
ment to issue international calls for pro-
jects in the EEZ.

SLIEMA is Malta's most expensive
locality when it comes to apartments
for rent, a Housing Authority report
shows, as tenants pay an average of
€1,218 and €1,439 for two-bedroom
and three-bedroom apartments re-
spectively.
e report, based on registered con-
tracts dated until 2022, aimed at pro-
viding a comprehensive view of the
private rental market. e Northern
Harbour region is home to the most
expensive rental apartments, with
Saint Julian's being the second most
costly locality for tenants, as rents
reach an average of €1,141 per month
for two-bedroom apartments.
