maltatoday | SUNDAY • 27 MARCH 2022 OPINION 3 LETTERS & EDITORIAL maltatoday | SUNDAY • 23 JULY 2023 Mikiel Galea Letters & Clarifications Abortion care is health care JOHN Azzopardi, writing in MaltaTo- day, must be using a different dictionary to mine. As a medical doctor, I can assure him and your readers that the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynae- cologists in the UK (to which inci- dentally most Maltese specialists pay an annual fee to remain a Member or Fellow of), as well as the equivalent organisations in other countries, to say nothing of the World Health Or- ganisation, all consider abortion care to be health care. It is time for abortion to be decrimi- nalised. Prime Minister please note. Prof. Isabel Stabile obo Doctors for Choice St Julians Broken lifts make road crossing dangerous SINCE we published a "Report a broken lift" form on our website in November 2021, Rota and Infrastructure Malta received 268 complaints about not-func- tioning lifts. Commuters travelling through Marsa and the Mriehel Bypass especially regularly face the harsh reality of not being able to cross the road safely. Since the beginning of 2023, we have received 172 reports of broken lifts, which means that almost everyday cy- clists and pedestrians find themself with no safe way to get to the other side of the road. The reaction time to the reports by Infrastructure Malta isn't satisfactory either. Some users had filled out the form many times since the lifts hadn't been fixed for days after their first com- plaint. This situation raises many questions. How can taxpayers' money be spent on lifts that frequently don't work? What's the service level agreement? What were the tender specifications for the lift? We have repeatedly pointed out that at-level crossings or overpasses with ramps should be the preferred way of crossing for cyclists and pedestrians. Lifts cannot be the only option to cross the road as their regular malfunction puts vulnerable traffic users in danger. Juan Buhagiar Duijst Policy officer, Rota
