OPINION 3 LETTERS & EDITORIAL Mikiel Galea Letters & Clarifications Appeal to PA: Fort Cambridge ON July, 13 the Planning Authority approved a 30-storey hotel on the 19th century Fort Cambridge barracks in Tigné Sliema ignoring a request pre- sented by NGOs and the Sliema local council eight years ago for the building to be scheduled. On the day, I expressed my frustra- tion at this dismal and orchestrated decision of bastardizing a historic ed- ifice with a superstructure rising from its midst. The construction will foist its undesirable consequences on several one-way street residents with an un- warranted hotel of almost 400 rooms, eventually putting great pressure on old networks of energy, water and drains in the area. The disaster such a huge erection would bring to this resident and com- mercial zone right between the Tigné Point Mall and the quant Sliema shop- ping centre is horrendous. For many years, this tourist pristine area on a narrow neck of land would suddenly become a huge building site with dust, din and debris abounding with cranes and heavy vehicles, generating traffic chaos. Worst still seeing it from the Grand Harbour, it will tower over the Valletta skyline threatening the capital's 1980 UNESCO accolade. Another gloomy aspect of a 100m superstructure in this highest point of the peninsula will also certainly deprive homes from their right to light, as its infinite shadow in winter, when Earth is tilted away from the Sun, would affect the residents of ten streets surrounding the unsolicited project. In an attempt to counter such an insensitive decision that only seems to feed the greed of speculators, residents and persons who love Sliema are unit- ing with Din l-Art Ħelwa, Moviment Graffiti and other environmental NGOs in lodging an appeal for common sense to prevail. For this purpose, together with co-res- ident Simon Camilleri, I wish to appeal to all residents, persons who frequent Sliema and citizens of good will who have our Island at heart, to join this ap- peal by sending in their name, ID num- ber and email address to cambridgeap- peal@gmail.com as soon as possible. Malta is right now being threatened by reckless irresponsible institutional sanctioned decisions that are degrading our long-established values. Every bit to stop this voracity helps. Charles Xuereb Sliema MPs in conflict with God's law I am not worried that Prof. Isabel Sta- bile has discovered a new dictionary, probably entitled "master deceiver". I have St Pope John Paul II's intellectual and spiritual legacy to back my argu- ment. When a parliament authorizes the termination of pregnancy, agreeing to the elimination of the unborn child, it commits a grave abuse against an innocent human being, utterly unable to defend itself. Parliaments which ap- prove and promulgate such laws must be aware that they are exceeding their proper competence and placing them- selves in open conflict with God's law and the law of nature. Now if such rational corollary does not force conviction on the prejudiced, foolish and brain-washed, it is waste of time and space to argue with them who seriously refuse to listen and seriously defend an absurdity. No truth has ever been safe from human perversity. Let's pray and hope that Prof. Stabile will realise how easily men and women deceive themselves and snatch at any excuse, opportunity and fabrication to evade the truth.
