maltatoday | SUNDAY • 13 AUGUST 2023 8 COMMERCIAL Kinnie 50cl bottle now made from 100% recycled PET SIMONDS Farsons Cisk plc, owner and producer of the ever-popular Kinnie brand, has announced that the bottles used for Kinnie, Kinnie Zest and Diet Kinnie in the 50cl size are now using 100% recycled PET (rPET). This phased launch is just the first step of a larger-scale and longer-term investment which eventually will see all PET bottles packaged by Simonds Farsons Cisk being made of 100% recycled PET. This is in line with UNESDA's com- mitment to only produce PET bot- tles made from 100% recycled PET and/or renewable PET by 2030 (*), and is well ahead of the EU's Single Use Plastics Directive 2019/904 (**) that stipulates a minimum rPET content of 25% by 2025 (**). Simonds Farsons Cisk plc is a founding member of the Malta Bev- erage Producers Association, which in turn, is a member of UNESDA, a European association that repre- sents the European soft drinks in- dustry. UNESDA was established in 1958 and is based in Brussels. "At Farsons we are firmly com- mitted to reducing our carbon foot- print, and ensuring that our pack- aging is as sustainable as possible, is just one of the many measures we are investing in. This launch is the first step in our journey and our ul- timate target is for the full Kinnie range, as well as the rest of our soft drinks portfolio in PET bottles, to be packaged using 100% recycled PET," commented Ms Susan Ween- ink Camilleri, Head of Sales & Mar- keting at Simonds Farsons Cisk plc. Recycled PET is PET plastic that has been recycled, reprocessed, and made into something new. Addi- tionally, any packaging made from rPET can, in turn, be recycled. The use of rPET is fully in line with the principles of a circular economy. This investment in 100% rPET complements the BCRS (Beverage Container Refund Scheme) which has recently announced a 74% col- lection rate per month since Janu- ary 2023, with the average number of bottles collected per day being almost 675,000 (***). "The longer-term vision of the beverage industry that packaging should never become waste is one which we fully endorse," continued Ms Weenink Camilleri. Kinnie, Diet Kinnie and Kinnie Zest are produced, marketed and distributed by Simonds Farsons Cisk plc. Kinnie and its variants are available in 33cl cans, 25cl glass bottles and 50cl, 1 litre and 1.5 litre PET. Presenting Ċiċi l-Ispettatriċi - resident curious cat at the 2023 Malta Book Festival YOU can catch her strolling through the bookstands, and you can also try to call her by her name, but she'll always do as she pleases and will only join you if she wants to! Meet 'Ċiċi L-Ispettatriċi', the third of four captivating characters featured in this year's Malta Book Festival poster! Ċiċi is a curious cat who finds delight in the transformation of written tales into captivat- ing spectacles, embodying the essence of a viewer who finds joy in experiencing books come to life through various visual mediums like cinema, television, and performing arts. Have you ever read a book, then watched its movie adaptation, and thought about how the literary experience is reshaped in other mediums? Or perhaps it was the other way around - you first saw the movie, then read the book, enriching your experience? Thanks to a varied pro- gramme of events, visitors to the Malta Book Festival will be able to attend activities which appeal to their tastes. Whether it's films or dramat- ic performances inspired by books, our programme will bring you events that breathe life into the printed word. Just like every edition, shows for school children are being adapted from a number of National Book Prize winning stories, making spectators out of the students, and who knows, perhaps Ċiċi could be seen among them admiring the show! This year the Festival will be celebrating the transform- ative effects of literature, be it read or written, as embod- ied in Ray il-Qarrej and Filip il-Kittieb, but also when it is woven in harmony with other artistic forms, as manifested in Ċiċi l-Ispettatriċi and our last upcoming character. Be like Ċiċi then, and quench your curiosity at the 2023 Malta Book Festival. The Festival is being held between Wednesday 18 and Sunday 22 October at the Malta Fairs and Conventions Center (MFCC), Ta' Qali.
