Email: contact@studyfirsteurope.com A 52-year-old pilot has plead- ed not guilty to assaulting and threatening his partner, who he had been dating for four months. Massimo Galea, who resides in Wardija, was denied pro- visional bail when he was ar- raigned on Tuesday accused of repeatedly threatening his partner who had met her at work in Slovakia. In court, the prosecution ar- gued that the accused and the victim worked with the same Slovak airline, making it un- suitable to grant the accused bail because he knows his part- ner's place of residence. He was also said to have tried to get in touch with her when he threat- ened her online. Magistrate Claire Stafrace Zammit rejected the request for bail on the grounds that the victim has yet to testify and that there is no peace of mind that the accused will be com- plying with conditions granted by the Court if bail is granted. Inspector Joseph Busuttil led the prosecution, assisted by lawyers Cynthia Tomasuo- lo and Cynthia Ellul Sciberras from the Attorney General's office. Lawyer Jason Grima ap- peared for the accused. This is a case related to what happened in court on Friday when Magistrate Abigail Cri- tien dismissed a habeas corpus action by Galea, who claimed that his girlfriend had been "abducted" from his home by the police. The request was made by Massimo Galea, in a hearing during which the po- lice testified that the woman was never arrested. It appeared that the wom- an simply left Galea, and she wanted to make sure that the accused would not find her. Galea filed an application for habeas corpus - a proce- dure, available to persons un- der arrest, which requires the duty magistrate to urgently examine the legality of their arrest. Galea was not a person under arrest and filed the pro- cedure on behalf of his 'girl- friend'. However, when the applica- tion was heard on Friday, the police confirmed that his girl- friend was not in lockup or in prison, and hence not arrested. Indeed, Inspector Busuttil de- clared that the woman in ques- tion was not missing, "because I know where she is". But when the defence counsel requested that he state her whereabouts, the police inspector curtly re- fused. "I am not here to satisfy your curiosity," he said. Pilot accused of assault arrested after claiming police abducted his girlfriend Anti-abortion lobby distances itself from Abba Party, Partit Popolari calls for referendum Wardija man who claimed police abducted his girlfriend pleads not guilty to threatening his partner of four months THE Life Network Foundation has disassociated themselves from calls by the Abba Party and Partit Popolari for an abrogative referendum on the amendments to Malta's abortion laws. In a statement on Tuesday, the Life Network Foundation said the two parties set up a stall near Parliament during the group's March for Life on Sunday. The foundation said the two parties "took advantage of this occasion, setting up a stall near the Parliament outside the scope of the March to collect signatures for an abrogative referendum, a campaign that was started long before the March for Life". "The Life Network Foundation necessarily disassociates itself from this initiative because, to- gether with its partners in the Coalition Inti Tista' Ssalvani, it- brought the necessary changes to ensure that the possibility for the introduction of abortion on demand was avoided." "The Life Network Foundation can never support an initiative that unwinds the law that it has actively swayed to ensure that Malta maintains the full protec- tion that was afforded already by the criminal code to the unborn child before these amendments where passed." The foundation also pointed out that the law as amended re- ceived heavy criticism from the pro-choice movement, while be- ing supported by the President of Malta, the Labour and National- ist Parties, coalition partners and the Bishops of Malta and Gozo.
