maltatoday | SUNDAY • 27 MARCH 2022 OPINION 3 LETTERS & EDITORIAL maltatoday | SUNDAY • 10 DECEMBER 2023 Mikiel Galea Letters & Clarifications Kopin in solidarity with El Hiblu 3 THE El Hiblu 3, as the youths Abdalla, Amara and Kader are known, had to endure four and a half years of unjust trial and treatment. Unjust, because none of the evidence presented in court indicate that they have committed any crime. Because they are young people who deserve sup- port and not the violation of their fun- damental rights. Because they helped defuse a tense situation on a ship with 100 children, women and men which could have ended in people jumping overboard to certain death. Not to men- tion that they were fleeing from the hell that Libya is for migrants, that is, from certain imprisonment, torture, slavery or death. That makes them heroes, not villains. All this notwithstanding, Malta's Attorney General Victoria Buttigieg has decided to issue a Bill of Indict- ment against the three youths. A bill that wrongfully accuses them of having committed severe crimes and that, if found guilty, could mean life in prison for them. Kopin stands united with many Mal- tese and international institutions and individuals in firmly telling the Attor- ney General – you are wrong. Your decision is wrong. It is the opposite of justice. It is strong with the weak. Kopin stands in solidarity with the El Hiblu 3. Free the El Hiblu 3. Dominik Kalweit Vice Executive Director Kopin Bir id-Deheb bottleneck and Ghaxaq underpass INFRASTRUCTURE Malta is currently resurfacing the section of Tal-Barrani Road between the Lidl Supermarket and Montebello Tyres, which is not a bad thing except that this is just surface maintenance and not the much-needed junction improvement. The bottleneck at Bir id-Deheb is problematic and will not be solved by a few road markings. Worse still is the fact that IM is planning a roundabout at the junction near Lidl, which will make the current resurfacing works redun- dant in a few months' time. The roads agency should think of creating an underpass for traffic pass- ing from Tal-Barrani to Marsaxlokk and vice versa to reduce the volume of cars at the Bir id-Deheb roundabout. Additionally, the Għaxaq to Gudja road should be seriously considered as one of the underpass projects being proposed by Project Green. Shifting traffic along a section of this road beneath the surface would create a new open space that allows residents of Għaxaq on the out- skirts to reach the village centre without having to cross a busy road. These road projects would be benefi- cial to residents of Għaxaq, Żejtun and Marsaskala since the area is one of only three exit points for the latter town. Alfred Muscat Birżebbuġa The El Hiblu 3
