maltatoday | SUNDAY • 10 DECEMBER 2023 9 COMMERCIAL Melita ranks first in Green Transport Initiative at Malta Business Awards MELITA secured first place in the Green Transport Initiative category at the Malta Business Awards over the weekend, a tes- tament to its commitment to sus- tainable practices. This recognition, organised by the Malta Chamber of SMEs and Malta Enterprise, reaffirms Mel- ita's dedication to reducing their greenhouse gas emissions. Today, 40 per cent of Melita's fleet has already transitioned to electric vehicles, reducing the company's greenhouse gas emis- sions by 41 tonnes after allowing for the energy needed for charg- ing the vehicles. The goal is to convert 90 per cent of its fleet to electric by 2025. The implementation of a park- ing management app is another eco-friendly initiative embraced by Melita. This initiative focuses on optimising space and curbing the carbon footprint for employ- ees and visitors at its head offices in the Central Business District, one of Malta's busiest business areas. Convenient access to des- ignated parking spots for employ- ees and visitors reduces the need to drive the extra distance to find a parking spot, reducing frustra- tion and emissions. Randolph Said, Chief Financial Officer at Melita Limited, said: "Our commitment to cleaner air is embodied in the transi- tion away from conventional fuel-driven cars. Placing first in the Green Transport Initiative category at the Malta Business Awards underscores our dedica- tion to environmental responsi- bility." Melita has been carbon neutral since 2022, and this award un- derscores its approach to imple- menting smart and sustainable initiatives across all its opera- tions. The Civic Trust Awards scheme was established in the UK in 1959 to recognise out- standing architecture, planning and design in the built environ- ment. It is one of the oldest built environment award schemes in Europe and has rewarded over 5,500 buildings which have made a difference to local peo- ple and their communities. Just over a hundred projects were selected from over 300 en- tries. The shortlisted projects hail mainly from the UK but al- so include Wales, Scotland, Ire- land, Poland, Lithuania, France, Germany and USA. All Regional Finalists will now be considered by the National Judging Panel members in the Civic Trust Awards, Pro Tem Awards, Selwyn Goldsmith Awards or AABC Conservation Awards. Each project may go on to be recognised and be one of the 2024 Award or Highly Commended Winners. The €86 million Farsons brewery regeneration project has seen one of Malta's finest 20th-century industrial build- ings transformed into a vibrant green office campus and world- class business destination. Spearheaded by London-based ritchie*studio, led by renowned architect Ian Ritchie, in collab- oration with Alex Torpiano's engineering-focused Maltese practice TBA Periti, and cele- brated environmental physicist Doug King, the transformation of the iconic Art Deco site was inspired by Maltese palace gar- dens and the island's vernacular buildings. Opened 73 years ago, in June 1950, the original brewery is one of the first and finest ex- amples of concrete-reinforced Art Deco buildings. The rede- velopment consists of seven low-density and low-rise, ter- raced office blocks, all of which are intersected by landscaped generous gardens, courtyards and terraces. The project is al- so designed to meet the strict- est of environmental codes. It boasts a cutting-edge climate control system that utilises sus- tainable technology and archi- tectural designs that maximise natural light while showcasing the site's unique industrial her- itage. Mr Michael Farrugia, Direc- tor of both Simonds Farsons Cisk plc and Trident Estates plc, as well as deputy CEO of the Farsons beverage business, was delighted by this prestig- ious recognition. "It is truly an honour to be a Finalist in these highly respected awards and to be listed alongside other nota- ble projects in Europe." The 2024 Civic Trust Awards winners will be announced in March 2024.
