maltatoday | SUNDAY • 17 DECEMBER 2023 7 ALMANAC Nature Notebook 897. Dartford Warbler UNTIL the 1970s the Dartford warbler (M. bufula tax-xagħri) used to be seen annually, though it was never common. But in recent dec- ades something changed and this diminutive bird is much scarcer now. It's normal that species shift their range sometimes, diminish- ing in areas as they spread to new regions – and thanks to climate change this trend has quickened noticeably. The Dartford warbler is a bird of open country with low shrub, such as our garrigue. It's tiny and active, flitting about the hardy aromatic shrubs hunting insects and other invertebrates. Two were present these past days at a site in northern Malta, including the stunning male pictured here. New bins installed in the Floriana market area Friends of the Earth Malta (FoEMalta) has partnered with Tipico to tackle the persistent littering issue in Floriana. The NGO, situated in the area, added four waste bins and a cigarette bin along the Sunday market route. Proximity to the sea exacerbates the problem, affecting marine life. FoE Malta praised the cleansing department's cooperation in maintaining timely bin emptying. Director Martin Galea de Giovanni stressed the priority of reducing consumption and holding market stall owners accountable. Despite new bins, a recent cleanup event revealed a concerning reality with over 50 bags of waste in a 10-meter stretch. FoE Malta suggests transforming a fenced-off green area into a public space and calls for enhanced waste management during market events, urging collaboration for a cleaner, sustainable Floriana. A GOOD WEEK Good Week/Bad Week A BAD WEEK Director Greta Gerwig has been named president of the jury for next year's Cannes Film Festival, following the huge success of her film Barbie. Gerwig was described by organisers of the French event as "a heroine of our modern times" who "shakes up the status quo" in the cinema world. The award-winning comedy series Curb Your Enthusiasm, created by and starring Larry David, is coming to an end after 24 years. The 12th season of the show will be its last, said Warner Brothers-Discovery, which owns the HBO network. Barbie is the most successful film of the year at the box office and a major awards contender. The comedy, which premiered in 2000 and stars David in a fictionalised version of his own life, is HBO's longest-running scripted comedy series.
