maltatoday | SUNDAY • 7 JANUARY 2024 7 ALMANAC Nature Notebook 900. Foresta 2000 RESTORING habitat is something BirdLife is good at, so restoring woodland – a habitat that's virtually lost in Malta – is always a good idea. This was the argument that in the late 1990s drove us to create Foresta 2000. The excuse was the upcoming new millennium. Stud- ies were made and plans drawn up. With project partners Din l-Art Ħelwa and PARK, and thousands of schoolkids who grew trees for our nursery, Foresta 2000 was a success. Despite setbacks like regu- lar vandal attacks who destroyed thousands of saplings, we planted 20,000+ trees and shrubs. The trees are now maturing and provid- ing birds, reptiles and insects with food and shelter. Once a degraded area overrun by illegal hunters, offroaders and squatters, the place now smells of pine needles and new soil. Go visit this winter, it's free and open 24/7. Fundraising Event: Kombucha Workshop Curious about the ins and outs of kombucha? Unlock the hidden se- crets of kombucha with Marta Kopacsi who will guide you through the whole process of making this zesty drink. Enjoy a kombucha tasting, followed by the workshop. At the end of the event you will leave with a bottle of your very own kombucha, including the SCOBY so you can continue your kombucha journey at home! Bottles will be provided. The workshop will be held at the Friends of the Earth Malta offices in Floriana. Registration is required by 10th January 2024. Glynis Johns, known best for her role as suffragette mother Winifred Banks in Mary Poppins, has died at the age of 100.
