CULTURE 14 maltatoday | WEDNESDAY • 31 JANUARY 2024 BIRZEBBUGIA Sailing Club (BSC) is gearing up to host the fourth edition of the Yachting Malta International Regatta between the 1st and the 4th February. Since its inception just a few years ago, this event has rapid- ly gained popularity. This year the regatta has drawn interest from sailors representing nine countries. Some sailors from previous editions, such as those from Japan, Bulgaria, and The Neth- erlands, will be returning to compete again. Among the international par- ticipants, the Bulgarian con- tingent stands out as the larg- est, boasting 11 sailors from three different clubs. Adding to the excitement, this year's regatta will see the inclusion of a new club: the renowned Turkish sports club Galatasaray, which will be rep- resented by four sailors. In the lead-up to the main event, a three-day clinic is cur- rently taking place, attracting 30 sailors eager to hone their skills. The clinic is being led by Ivan Vasilev, BSC's Performance Coach, along with Nikitas Checagioglou from Greece and Maarten Treuren, the Nether- lands' National Coach. Typically, regattas tend to emphasize the participation of sailors rather than the in- volvement of race committees. However, the Yachting Mal- ta International Regatta has managed to draw attention from renowned International Race Officers, including Bo- jan Gale, who oversees the IL- CA Class, and Miguel Amaral, responsible for the Optimist Class. Notably, Miguel Amaral's ex- pertise has earned him a role as one of the Race Officers for the upcoming Games of the XXX- III Olympiad in Paris this July. Furthermore, Pinar Coskun- er Genc, a member of the Jury at the Yachting Malta BSC In- ternational Regatta, will serve as the Chief Race Officer for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. Supported by Yachting Mal- ta, Visit Malta, Kunsill Lokali Birzebbuga, Veleria 3 Fl, Mal- ta Optimist Academy, RLR Yachting, and SportMalta, the Yachting Malta BSC Regatta takes place under the auspic- es of the Malta Sailing Feder- ation. With participants hailing from Slovenia, the Nether- lands, Bulgaria, Japan, Ger- many, Tajikistan, Lithuania, Turkey, and Malta, the regatta promises to be a thrilling in- ternational affair.
